The nonlinear stability in the {L^p} -norm, p ≥ 1 , of stationary weak discrete shocks for the Lax-Friedrichs scheme approximating general m × m systems of nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws is proved, provided that the summations of the initial perturbations equal zero. The result is proved by using both a weighted estimate and characteristic energy method based on the internal structures of the discrete shocks and the essential monotonicity of the Lax-Friedrichs scheme.

For the Boltzmann equation with an external potential force depending only on the space variables, there is a family of stationary solutions, which are local Maxwellians with space dependent density, zero velocity and constant temperature. In this paper, we will study the nonlinear stability of these stationary solutions by using the energy method. The analysis combines the analytic techniques used for the conservation laws using the fluid-type system derived from the Boltzmann equation (cf. [14]) and the dissipative effects on the fluid and non-fluid components of the Boltzmann equation through the celebrated H-theorem. To our knowledge, this is the first result on the global classical solutions to the Boltzmann equation with external force and non-trivial large time behavior in the whole space.

This paper is concerned with theoretical analysis of a heat and moisture transfer model arising from textile industries, which is described by a degenerate and strongly coupled parabolic system. We prove the global (in time) existence of weak solution by constructing an approximate solution with some standard smoothing. The proof is based on the physical nature of gas convection, in which the heat (energy) flux in convection is determined by the mass (vapor) flux in convection.

In this paper, the L p convergence rates of planar diffusion waves for multi-dimensional Euler equations with damping are considered. The analysis relies on a newly introduced frequency decomposition and Green function based energy method. It is a combination of the L p estimate on the low frequency component by using an approximate Green function and L 2 estimate on the high frequency component through the energy method. By noticing that the low frequency component in the approximate Green function has the algebraic decay which governs the large time behavior, while the high frequency component has the exponential decay but with singularity, their combination leads to a global algebraic decay estimate. To use the decay property only of the low frequency component in the approximate Green function avoids the singularity in the high frequency component so that it simplifies and improves the
