Let M⊂CN be a generic real-analytic submanifold of finite type, M′⊂CN′ be a real-analytic set, and p∈M, where we assume that N,N′⩾2. Let H:(CN,p)→CN′ be a formal holomorphic mapping sending M into M′, and let EM′ denote the set of points in M′ through which there passes a complex-analytic subvariety of positive dimension contained in M′. We show that, if H does not send M into EM′, then H must be convergent. As a consequence, we derive the convergence of all formal holomorphic mappings when M′ does not contain any complex-analytic subvariety of positive dimension, answering by this a long-standing open question in the field. More generally, we establish necessary conditions for the existence of divergent formal maps, even when the target real-analytic set is foliated by complex-analytic subvarieties, allowing us to settle additional convergence problems such as e.g. for transversal formal maps between Levi-non-degenerate hypersurfaces and for formal maps with range in the tube over the light cone.

The chapter discusses the group actions on R³. The Smith conjecture has many equivalent forms, and each of these forms has various consequences and generalizations. The Smith conjecture is a structure theorem about symmetries of the product of a compact surface with an interval. Here the interval may be closed or open. The usual Smith conjecture is equivalent to proving the smooth <i>Z_n</i> actions on <i>S</i>² [0, 1] are conjugate to actions that preserve the product structure. This generalized Smith conjecture represents the belief that all the symmetries of the product of a compact surface with an interval actually arise from the symmetries of the surface extended trivially to the product structure. The chapter presents how to apply minimal surfaces to study the generalized Smith conjecture on <i>S</i>² <i>I</i>, where <i>I</i> is an open or closed interval. We exhibit a transformation taking special Lagrangian submanifolds of a Calabi-Yau together with local systems to vector bundles over the mirror manifold with connections obeying deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills equations. That is, the transformation relates supersymmetric A- and Bcycles. In this paper, we assume that the mirror pair are dual torus fibrations with flat tori and that the A-cycle is a section. We also show that this transformation preserves the (holomorphic) Chern-Simons functional for all connections. Furthermore, on corresponding moduli spaces of supersymmetric cycles it identifies the graded tangent spaces and the holomorphic m-forms. In particular, we verify Vafa’s mirror conjecture with bundles in this special case.

We consider manifolds with conic singularities that are isometric to Rn outside a compact set. Under natural geometric assumptions on the cone points, we prove the existence of a logarithmic resonance-free region for the cut-off resolvent. The estimate also applies to the exterior domains of non-trapping polygons via a doubling process. The proof of the resolvent estimate relies on the propagation of singularities theorems of Melrose and the second author [23] to establish a “very weak” Huygens’ principle, which may be of independent interest. As applications of the estimate, we obtain a exponential local energy decay and a resonance wave expansion in odd dimensions, as well as a lossless local smoothing estimate for the Schr¨odinger equation.

Some new differentiable sphere theorems are obtained via the Ricci flow and stable currents. We prove that if Mn is a compact manifold whose normalized scalar curvature and sectional curvature satisfy the pointwise pinching condition R0 > nKmax, where n 2 ( 1 4 , 1) is an explicit positive constant, then M is diffeomorphic to a spherical space form. We also provide a partial answer to Yau’s conjecture on the pinching theorem. Moreover, we prove that if Mn(n  3) is a compact manifold whose (n . 2)-th Ricci curvature and normalized scalar curvature satisfy the pointwise condition Ric(n.2) min > n(n .2)R0, where n 2 ( 1 4 , 1) is an explicit positive constant, then M is diffeomorphic to a spherical space form. We then extend the sphere theorems above to submanifolds in a Riemannian manifold. Finally we give a classification of submanifolds with weakly pinched curvatures, which improves the differentiable pinching theorems due to Andrews, Baker, and the authors.
