Let fn → f0 be a convergent sequence of rational maps, preserving critical relations, and f0 be geometrically finite with parabolic points. It is known that for some unlucky choices of sequences fn,the Julia sets J(fn) and their Hausdorff dimensions may fail to converge as n → ∞. Our main result here is to prove the convergence of J(fn) and H.dim J(fn) for generic sequences fn. The same conclusion was obtained earlier, with stronger hypotheses on the sequence fn, by Bodart-Zinsmeister and then by McMullen. We characterize those choices of fn by means of flows of appropriate polynomial vector fields (following Douady-Estrada-Sentenac). We first prove an independent result about the (s-dimensional) length of separatrices of such flows, and then use it to estimate tails of Poincar´e series. This, together with existing techniques,provides the desired control of conformal densities and Hausdorff dimensions. Our method may be applied to other problems relatedto parabolic perturbations.

We construct 2-surfaces of prescribed mean curvature in 3manifolds carrying asymptotically flat initial data for an isolated gravitating system with rather general decay conditions. The surfaces in question form a regular foliation of the asymptotic region of such a manifold. We recover physically relevant data, especially the ADM-momentum, from the geometry of the foliation. For a given set of data (M, g,K), with a three dimensional manifoldM, its Riemannian metric g, and the second fundamental form K in the surrounding four dimensional Lorentz space time manifold, the equation we solve is H+P = const or H−P = const. Here H is the mean curvature, and P = trK is the 2-trace of K along the solution surface. This is a degenerate elliptic equation for the position of the surface. It prescribes the mean curvature anisotropically, since P depends on the direction of the normal.

In this paper, we present two kinds of total Chern forms c(E,G) and c(E,G) as well as a total Segre form c(E,G) of a holomorphic Finsler vector bundle c(E,G) expressed by the Finsler metric c(E,G), which answers a question of Faran [The equivalence problem for complex Finsler Hamiltonians, in <i>Finsler Geometry</i>, Contemporary Mathematics, Vol. 196 (American Mathematical Society, Providence, RI, 1996), pp. 133144] to some extent. We construct balanced metrics on the family of non-Khler Calabi-Yau threefolds that are obtained by smoothing after contracting ( 1, 1) -rational curves on a Khler Calabi-Yau threefold. As an application, we construct balanced metrics on complex manifolds diffeomorphic to the connected sum of ( 1, 1) copies of ( 1, 1) .

We study the rigidity results for self-shrinkers in Euclidean space by restriction of the image under the Gauss map. The geometric properties of the target manifolds carry into effect. In the self-shrinking hypersurface situation Theorem 3.1and Theorem 3.2 not only improve the previous results, but also are optimal. In higher codimensional case, using geometric properties of the Grassmannian manifolds (the target manifolds of the Gauss map) we give a rigidity theorem for self-shrinking graphs.
