Motivated by the study of collapsing Calabi–Yau 3-folds with a Lefschetz K3 fibration, we construct a complete Calabi–Yau metric on C3 with maximal volume growth, which in the appropriate scale is expected to model the collapsing metric near the nodal point. This new Calabi–Yau metric has singular tangent cone at infinity C2/Z2×C, and its Riemannian geometry has certain non-standard features near the singularity of the tangent cone, which are more typical of adiabatic limit problems. The proof uses an existence result in H-J. Hein’s Ph.D. thesis to perturb an asymptotic approximate solution into an actual solution, and the main difficulty lies in correcting the slowly decaying error terms.

An n dimensional minimal submanifold $\sum$  of $R^{n+m}$ is called nonparametric if $\sum$  can be represented as the graph of a vector-valued function $f : D \subset \mathbb{ R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^n$. This note provides a sufficient condition for the stability of such $\sum$ in terms of the norm of the differential $df$.

We prove a structure theorem for compact aspherical Lorentz manifolds with abundant local symmetry. If M is a compact, aspherical, real-analytic, complete Lorentz manifold such that the isometry group of the universal cover has semisimple identity component, then the local isometry orbits in M are roughly ¯bers of a¯ber bundle. A corollary is that if M has an open, dense, locally homogeneous subset, then M is locally homogeneous.

We apply various topological methods to distinguish connected components of moduli spaces of complete Riemannian metrics of nonnegative sectional curvature on open manifolds. The new geometric ingredient is that souls of nearby nonnegatively curved metrics are ambiently isotopic.
