For a one-parameter family (V, {i}pg i=1) of general type hypersurfaces with bases of holomorphic n-forms, we construct open covers V = Spg i=1 Ui using tropical geometry. We show that after normalization, each i is approximately supported on a unique Ui and such a pair approximates a Calabi-Yau hypersurface together with its holomorphic n-form as the parameter becomes large. We also show that the Lagrangian fibers in the fibration constructed by Mikhalkin [9] are asymptotically special Lagrangian. As the holomorphic n-form plays an important role in mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau manifolds, our results is a step toward understanding mirror symmetry for general type manifolds.

In this paper we prove a global existence theorem, in the direction of cosmological expansion, for sufficiently small perturbations of a family of n + 1-dimensional, spatially compact spacetimes, which generalizes the k = −1 Friedmann–Lemaˆıtre-Robertson– Walker vacuum spacetime. This work extends the result from [3].The background spacetimes we consider are Lorentz cones over negative Einstein spaces of dimension n  3. We use a variant of the constant mean curvature, spatially harmonic (CMCSH) gauge introduced in [2]. An important difference from the 3+1 dimensional case is that one may have a nontrivial moduli space of negative Einstein geometries. This makes it necessary to introduce a time-dependent background metric, which is used to define the spatially harmonic coordinate system that goes into the gauge. Instead of the Bel-Robinson energy used in [3], we here use an expression analogous to the wave equation type of energy introduced in [2] for the Einstein equations in CMCSH gauge. In order to prove energy estimates, it turns out to be necessary to assume stability of the Einstein geometry. Further, for our analysis it is necessary to have a smooth moduli space. Fortunately, all known examples of negative Einstein geometries satisfy these conditions. We give examples of families of Einstein geometries which have nontrivial moduli spaces. A product construction allows one to generate new families of examples. Our results demonstrate causal geodesic completeness of the perturbed spacetimes, in the expanding direction, and show that the scale-free geometry converges toward an element in the moduli space of Einstein geometries, with a rate of decay depending on the stability properties of the Einstein geometry.

In 1969, Vic Klee asked whether a convex body is uniquely determined (up to translation and reflection in the origin) by its inner section function, the function giving for each direction the maximal area of sections of the body by hyperplanes orthogonal to that direction. We answer this question in the negative by constructing two infinitely smooth convex bodies of revolution about the xn-axis in Rn, n  3, one origin symmetric and the other not centrally symmetric, with the same inner section function. Moreover, the pair of bodies can be arbitrarily close to the unit ball.

We prove, in the setting of a measure energy space (M, ,(, )), that if the smallest eigenvalue 1 () of the generator of the Dirichlet form in any precompact open set M admits the estimate 1 () ()- where is a measure absolutely continuous with respect to and > 0 then a similar estimate holds for the kth smallest eigenvalue: k () const (k/ ()) . As an application, we obtain an upper estimate of the stability index of a minimal surface in [inline-graphic xmlns: xlink=" http://www. w3. org/1999/xlink" xlink: href=" 01i"/] via the total curvature.

A geometric classification of the compact four-dimensional Einstein-Weyl manifolds with at least four-dimensional symmetry group is given. Our results also sharpen previous results on four-dimensional Einstein metrics and correct Parker's topological classification of cohomogeneity-one four-manifolds.
