This goal of the paper is to show that the automorphisms of the complex of curves in a surface are induced by the self-homeomorphisms of the surface except the surface is the 2-holed torus.

The Gauss-Bonnet theorem and the Cohn-Vossen inequality show that the only complete surface with positive curvature is either the sphere, RP2, or the plane. In higher dimension, the curvature tensor is far more complicated. There are several commonly used partial components of the curvature tensor that had been studied for the whole century. The simplest one is the scalar curvature which is the average of all curvatures at one point. It appeared in the Hilbert action for general relativity. This was studied extensively in connection with general relativity.

We show the intersection of a compact almost complex subvariety of dimension 4 and a compact almost complex submanifold of codimension 2 is a J-holomorphic curve. This is a generalization of positivity of intersections for J-holomorphic curves in almost complex 4-manifolds to higher dimensions. As an application, we discuss pseudoholomorphic sections of a complex line bundle. We introduce a method to produce J-holomorphic curves using the differential geometry of almost Hermitian manifolds. When our main result is applied to pseudoholomorphic maps, we prove the singularity subset of a pseudoholomorphic map between almost complex 4-manifolds is J-holomorphic. Building on this, we show degree one pseudoholomorphic maps between almost complex 4-manifolds are actually birational morphisms in pseudoholomorphic category.

We introduce an Alexander polynomial for MOY graphs. For a framed trivalent MOY graph G, we refine the construction and obtain a framed ambient isotopy invariant \Delta(G,c)(t). The invariant \Delta(G,c)(t) satisfies a series of relations, which we call MOY type relations, and conversely these relations determine \Delta(G,c)(t). Using them we provide a graphical definition of the Alexander polynomial of a link. Finally, we discuss some properties and applications of our invariants.
