Gaseous fluids may move slowly, as smoke does, or at high speed, such as occurs with explosions. High-speed gas flow is always accompanied by low-speed gas flow, which produces rich visual details in the fluid motion. Realistic visualization involves a complex dynamic flow field with both low and high speed fluid behavior. In computer graphics, algorithms to simulate gaseous fluids address either the low speed case or the high speed case, but no algorithm handles both efficiently. With the aim of providing visually pleasing results, we present a hybrid algorithm that efficiently captures the essential physics of both low- and high-speed gaseous fluids. We model the low speed gaseous fluids by a grid approach and use a particle approach for the high speed gaseous fluids. In addition, we propose a physically sound method to connect the particle model to the grid model. By exploiting complementary strengths and avoiding weaknesses of the grid and particle approaches, we produce some animation examples and analyze their computational performance to demonstrate the effectiveness of the new hybrid method.

We construct a generalization of twistor spaces of hypercomplex manifolds and hyper-Kahler manifolds M, by generalizing the twistor P1 to a more general complex manifold Q. The resulting manifold X is complex if and only if Q admits a holomorphic map to P1. We make branched double covers of these manifolds. Some class of these branched double covers can give rise to non-Kahler Calabi-Yau manifolds. We show that these manifolds X and their branched double covers are non-Kahler. In the cases that Q is a balanced manifold, the resulting manifold X and its special branched double cover have balanced Hermitian metrics.

We apply our model of quantum gravity to a Kerr-AdS spacetime of dimension $2 m+1$, $m\ge2$, where all rotational parameters are equal, resulting in a wave equation in a quantum spacetime which has a sequence of solutions that can be expressed as a product of stationary and temporal eigenfunctions. The stationary eigenfunctions can be interpreted as radiation and the temporal as gravitational waves. The event horizon corresponds in the quantum model to a Cauchy hypersurface that can be crossed by causal curves in both directions such that the information paradox does not occur. We also prove that the Kerr-AdS spacetime can be maximally extended by replacing in a generalized Boyer-Lindquist coordinate system the $r$ variable by $\rho=r^2$ such that the extended spacetime has a timelike curvature singularity in $\rho=-a^2$.

We compute the one-loop effective action of two D0-branes in the matrix model for a cosmological background, and find vanishing static potential. However, there is a non-vanishing v2 term not predicted in a supergravity calculation. This term is complex and signals an instability of the two D0-brane system, it may also indicate that the matrix model is incorrect.

We obtain the asymptotic symmetry algebra of Chern-Simons theory with Dirichlet boundary conditions for fixed chemical potential. These boundary conditions are obeyed by higher spin black holes. For each embedding of into , we show that the asymptotic symmetry group is independent of the chemical potential. On the one hand, starting from AdS in the principal embedding, we show that the symmetry is preserved upon turning on perturbatively spin 3 chemical potentials. On the other hand, starting from AdS in the diagonal embedding, we show that the symmetry is preserved upon turning on finite spin 3/2 chemical potentials. We also make connections between the canonical Lagrangian formalism and integrability methods based on the n = 3 KdV (Boussinesq) hierarchy.
