Abstract We present a relative trace formula approach to the Gross–Zagier formula and its generalization to higher-dimensional unitary Shimura vari- eties. As a crucial ingredient, we formulate a conjectural arithmetic funda- mental lemma for unitary Rapoport–Zink spaces. We prove the conjecture when the Rapoport–Zink space is associated to a unitary group in two or three variables.

Theorem. Let $\pi$ be a finite group of order $n$, $R$ be a Dedekind domain satisfying that (i) $\fn{char}R=0$, (ii) every prime divisor of $n$ is not invertible in $R$, and (iii) $p$ is unramified in $R$ for any prime divisor $p$ of $n$. Then all the flabby (resp.\ coflabby) $R\pi$-lattices are invertible if and only if all the Sylow subgroups of $\pi$ are cyclic. The above theorem was proved by Endo and Miyata when $R=\bm{Z}$ \cite[Theorem 1.5]{EM}. As applications of this theorem, we give a short proof and a partial generalization of a result of Torrecillas and Weigel \cite[Theorem A]{TW}, which was proved using cohomological Mackey functors.

We provide a family of counterexamples to a first formulation of the dynamical Manin–Mumford conjecture. We propose a revision of this conjecture and prove it for arbitrary subvarieties of Abelian varieties under the action of group endomorphisms and for lines under the action of diagonal endomorphisms of $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{ P}^1$.

We call a finite set ${\mathcal{D}}\subset {\Bbb Z}^s$ a {\it (self-affine) tile digit set} with respect to an expanding integral matrix ${\bf A}$ if the self-affine set $T({\bf A}, \D)$ is a tile in ${\Bbb R}^s$. It has been a widely open problem to characterize the tile digit sets for a given ${\bf A}$. While there are substantial investigations on ${\Bbb R}$, there is no result on ${\Bbb R}^s$ other than the case where $|\det {\bf A}| =p$ with $p$ a prime. In this paper, we make an initiation to study a basic case ${\bf A} = p{\bf I}_2$ in ${\Bbb R}^2$. We characterize the tile digit sets by making use of the zeros of the mask polynomial of ${\mathcal{D}}$ associated with a tile criterion of Kenyon [K], together with a recent result of Iosevich {\it et al} on factorization of sets in ${\Bbb Z}_p \times {\Bbb Z}_p$ [IMP].
