In this paper, an arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian local discontinuous Galerkin (ALE-LDG) method for Hamilton–Jacobi equations will be developed, analyzed and numerically tested. This method is based on the time-dependent approximation space defined on the moving mesh. A priori error estimates will be stated with respect to the L∞ 􏰒(0, T ; L2)norm. In particular, the optimal (k + 1) convergence in one dimension and the suboptimal (k + 1 ) convergence in two dimensions will be proven for the semi-discrete method, when a local Lax–Friedrichs flux and piecewise polynomials of degree k on the reference cell are used. Furthermore, the validity of the geometric conservation law will be proven for the fully-discrete method. Also, the link between the piecewise constant ALE-LDG method and the monotone scheme, which converges to the unique viscosity solution, will be shown. The capability of the method will be demonstrated by a variety of one and two dimensional numerical examples with convex and noneconvex Hamiltonian.

Two-dimensional interaction between two Taylor vortices is simulated systematically through solving the two-dimensional, unsteady compressible Navier-Stokes equations using a fifth order weighted essentially nonoscillatory finite difference scheme. The main purpose of this study is to reveal the mechanism of sound generation in two-dimensional interaction of two Taylor vortices. Based on an extensive parameter study on the evolution of the vorticity field, we classify the interaction of two Taylor vortices into four types. The first type is the interaction of two counter-rotating vortices with similar strengths. The second type is the interaction of two co-rotating vortices without merging. The third type is the merging of two co-rotating vortices. The fourth type is the interaction of two vortices with a large difference in their strengths or scales. The mechanism of sound generation is analyzed.

High order path-conservative schemes have been developed for solving nonconservative hyperbolic systems. Recently, it has been observed that this approach may have some computational issues and shortcomings. In this paper, a modification to the high order path-conservative scheme in is proposed to improve its computational performance and to overcome some of the shortcomings. This modification is based on the high order finite volume WENO scheme with subcell resolution and it uses an exact Riemann solver to catch the right paths at the discontinuities. An application to one-dimensional compressible two-medium flows of nonconservative or primitive Euler equations is carried out to show the effectiveness of this new approach.

In this paper we introduce a definition of the local conservation property for numerical methods solving time dependent conservation laws, which generalizes the classical local conservation definition. The motivation of our definition is the Lax-Wendroff theorem, and thus we prove it for locally conservative numerical schemes per our definition in one and two space dimensions. Several numerical methods, including continuous Galerkin methods and compact schemes, which do not fit the classical local conservation definition, are given as examples of locally conservative methods under our generalized definition.

In this paper, we propose and analyze a nodal-continuous and $H^1$-conforming finite element method for the numerical computation of Maxwell's equations, with singular solution in a fractional order Sobolev space $H^r(\Omega)$, where $r$ may take any value in the most interesting interval $(0, 1)$. The key feature of the method is that mass-lumping linear finite element $L^2$ projections act on the curl and divergence partial differential operators so that the singular solution can be sought in a setting of $L^2(\Omega)$ space. We shall use the nodal-continuous linear finite elements, enriched with one element bubble in each element, to approximate the singular and non-$H^1$ solution. Discontinuous and nonhomogeneous media are allowed in the method. Some error estimates are given and a number of numerical experiments for source problems as well as eigenvalue problems are presented to illustrate the superior performance of the proposed method.
