Solutions for many problems of interest exhibit singular behaviors at domain corners or points where boundary condition changes type. For this type of problems, direct spectral methods with usual polynomial basis functions do not lead to a satisfactory convergence rate. We develop in this paper a M\"untz-Galerkin method which is based on specially tuned M\"untz polynomials to deal with the singular behaviors of the underlying problems. By exploring the relations between Jacobi polynomials and M\"untz polynomials, we develop efficient implementation procedures for the M\"untz-Galerkin method, and provide optimal error estimates. As examples of applications, we consider the Poisson equation with mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions, whose solution behaves like $O(r^{1/2})$ near the singular point, and demonstrate that the M\"untz-Galerkin method greatly improves the rates of convergence of the usual spectral method.

Since 2000, the study of metamaterial has been a very hot topic due to its potential applications in many areas such as design of invisibility cloak and sub-wavelength imaging. Although several metamaterial models are often used by physicists and engineers, the study of their mathematical properties has lagged behind. In this paper, we initiate our investigation in the plasma-Lorentz model. More specifically, we first discuss the well-posedness of this model, then develop two fully-discrete finite element methods for solving it. Detailed stability and error analysis are carried out, and 3-D numerical results justifying our theoretical analysis are presented.

In this paper, we focus on error estimates to smooth solutions of semi-discrete discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods with quadrature rules for scalar conservation laws. The main techniques we use are energy estimate and Taylor expansion first introduced by Zhang and Shu. We show that, with ${P}^k$ (piecewise polynomials of degree $k$) finite elements in 1D problems, if the quadrature over elements is exact for polynomials of degree $(2k)$, error estimates of $O(h^{k+1/2})$ are obtained for general monotone fluxes, and optimal estimates of $O(h^{k+1})$ are obtained for upwind fluxes. For multidimensional problems, if in addition quadrature over edges is exact for polynomials of degree $(2k+1)$, error estimates of $O(h^k)$ are obtained for general monotone fluxes, and $O(h^{k+1/2})$ are obtained for monotone and sufficiently smooth numerical fluxes. Numerical results validate our analysis.

Jiang et al. (Transportation Research Part B, 2011, 45(2), 343-363) proposed a predictive continuum dynamic user-optimal (PDUO-C) model to investigate the dynamic characteristics of traffic flow and the corresponding route-choice behavior of travelers. The modeled region is a dense urban city, which is arbitrary in shape and has a single central business district (CBD). However, we argue that the model is not well posed due to an inconsistency in the route-choice strategy. To overcome this inconsistency, we revisit the PDUO-C problem, and construct an improved path-choice strategy. The improved model consists of a conservation law to govern the density, in which the flow direction is determined by the improved path-choice strategy, and a Hamilton-Jacobi equation to compute the total travel cost. The simultaneous satisfaction of both equations can be treated as a fixed-point problem. A self-adaptive method of successive averages (MSA) is proposed to solve this fixed-point problem. This method can automatically determine the optimal MSA step size using the least squares approach. Numerical examples are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the model and the solution algorithm.

In this paper, we investigate a simple limiter using weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) methodology for the Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin (RKDG) methods solving conservation laws, with the goal of obtaining a robust and high order limiting procedure to simultaneously achieve uniform high order accuracy and sharp, non-oscillatory shock transitions. The idea of this limiter is to reconstruct the entire polynomial, instead of reconstructing point values or moments in the classical WENO reconstructions. That is, the reconstruction polynomial on the target cell is a convex combination of polynomials on this cell and its neighboring cells and the nonlinear weights of the convex combination follow the classical WENO procedure. The main advantage of this limiter is its simplicity in implementation, especially for multi-dimensional meshes. Numerical results in one and two dimensions are provided to illustrate the behavior of this procedure.
