We consider an incompressible viscous flow without surface tension in a finite-depth domain of two dimensions, with free top boundary and fixed bottom boundary. This system is governed by the Navier-Stokes equations in this moving domain and the transport equation on the moving boundary. In this paper, we construct a stable numerical scheme to simulate the evolution of this system by discontinuous Galerkin method, and discuss the error analysis of the fluid under certain assumptions. Our formulation is mainly based on the geometric structure introduced earlier in the literature, and the natural energy estimate, which is rarely used in the numerical study of this system before.

The entropy solutions of the compressible Euler equations satisfy a minimum principle for the specific entropy. First order schemes such as Godunov-type and Lax-Friedrichs schemes and the second order kinetic schemes also satisfy a discrete minimum entropy principle. In this paper, we show an extension of the positivity-preserving high order schemes for the compressible Euler equations, to enforce the minimum entropy principle for high order finite volume and discontinuous Galerkin (DG) schemes.

We develop numerical methods for solving partial differential equations (PDE) defined on an evolving interface represented by the grid based particle method (GBPM) recently proposed in [S. Leung, H.K. Zhao, A grid based particle method for moving interface problems, J. Comput. Phys. 228 (2009) 77067728]. In particular, we develop implicit time discretization methods for the advectiondiffusion equation where the time step is restricted solely by the advection part of the equation. We also generalize the GBPM to solve high order geometrical flows including surface diffusion and Willmore-type flows. The resulting algorithm can be easily implemented since the method is based on meshless particles quasi-uniformly sampled on the interface. Furthermore, without any computational mesh or triangulation defined on the interface, we do not require remeshing or reparametrization in the case of highly distorted motion

A spectral collocation scheme for the three-dimensional incompressible \(({\varvec{u}},p)\) formulation of the Navier鈥揝tokes equations, in domains \(\varOmega \) with a non-periodic boundary condition, is described. The key feature is the high order approximation, by means of a local Hermite interpolant, of a Neumann boundary condition for use in the numerical solution of the pressure Poisson system. The time updates of the velocity \({\varvec{u}}\) and pressure \(p\) are decoupled as a result of treating the pressure gradient in the momentum equation explicitly in time. The pressure update is computed from a pressure Poisson equation. Extension of the overall methodology to the Boussinesq system is also described. The uncoupling of the pressure and velocity time updates results in a highly efficient scheme that is simple to implement and well suited for simulating moderate to high Reynolds and Rayleigh number flows. Accuracy checks are presented, along with simulations of the lid-driven cavity flow and a differentially heated cavity flow, to demonstrate the scheme produces accurate three-dimensional results at a reasonable computational cost.

In this paper, we develop third-order conservative sign-preserving and steady-state-preserving time integrations and seek their applications in multispecies and multireaction chemical reactive flows. In this problem, the density and pressure are nonnegative, and the mass fraction for the ith species, denoted as zi, 1<=i<=M, should be between 0 and 1, where M is the total number of species. There are four main difficulties in constructing high-order bound-preserving techniques for multispecies and multireaction detonations. First of all, most of the bound-preserving techniques available are based on Euler forward time integration. Therefore, for problems with stiff source, the time step will be significantly limited. Secondly, the mass fraction does not satisfy a maximum-principle and hence it is not easy to preserve the upper bound 1. Thirdly, in most of the previous works for gaseous denotation, the algorithm relies on second-order Strang splitting methods where the ux and stiff source terms can be solved separately, and the extension to high-order time discretization seems to be complicated. Finally, most of the previous ODE solvers for stiff problems cannot preserve the total mass and the positivity of the numerical approximations at the same time. In this paper, we will construct third-order conservative sign-preserving Rugne-Kutta and multistep methods to overcome all these difficulties. The time integrations do not depend on the Strang splitting, i.e. we do not split the flux and the stiff source terms. Moreover, the time discretization can handle the stiff source with large time step and preserves the steady-state. Numerical experiments will be given to demonstrate the good performance of the bound-preserving technique and the stability of the scheme for problems with stiff source terms.
