In this paper, we present entropy satisfying schemes for solving an integro-differential equation that describes the evolution of a population structured with respect to a continuous trait. In [P.-E. Jabin and G. Raoul, J. Math. Biol., 63 (2011), pp. 493–517] solutions are shown to converge toward the so-called evolutionary stable distribution (ESD) as time becomes large, using the relative entropy. At the discrete level, the ESD is shown to be the solution to a quadratic programming problem and can be computed by any well-established nonlinear programing algorithm. The schemes are then shown to satisfy the entropy dissipation inequality on the set where initial data are positive and the numerical solutions tend toward the discrete ESD in time. An alternative algorithm is presented to capture the global ESD for nonnegative initial data, which is made possible due to the mutation mechanism built into the modified scheme. A series of numerical tests are given to confirm both accuracy and the entropy satisfying property and to underline the efficiency of capturing the large time asymptotic behavior of numerical solutions in various settings.

The convergence of a fourth order finite difference method for the 2-D unsteady, viscous incompressible Boussinesq equations, based on the vorticity-stream function formulation, is established in this article. A compact fourth order scheme is used to discretize the momentum equation, and long-stencil fourth order operators are applied to discretize the temperature transport equation. A local vorticity boundary condition is used to enforce the no-slip boundary condition for the velocity. One-sided extrapolation is used near the boundary, dependent on the type of boundary condition for the temperature, to prescribe the temperature at ‘‘ghost’’ points lying outside of the computational domain. Theoretical results of the stability and accuracy of the method are also provided. In numerical experiments the method has been shown to be capable of producing highly resolved solutions at a reasonable computational cost.

In this paper, we adapt a simple weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) limiter, originally designed for discontinuous Galerkin (DG) schemes, to the correction procedure via reconstruction (CPR) framework for solving conservation laws. The objective of this simple WENO limiter is to simultaneously maintain uniform high order accuracy of the CPR framework in smooth regions and control spurious numerical oscillations near discontinuities. The WENO limiter we adopt in this paper is particularly simple to implement and will not harm the conservativeness of the CPR framework. Also, it uses information only from the target cell and its immediate neighbors, thus can maintain the compactness of the CPR framework. Since the CPR framework with the WENO limiter does not in general preserve positivity of the solution, we also extend the positivity preserving limiters to the CPR framework. Numerical results in one and two dimensions are provided to illustrate the good behavior of this procedure.

We propose an efficient eigensolver for computing densely distributed spectra of the two-dimensional transmission eigenvalue problem (TEP), which is derived from Maxwell's equations with Tellegen media and the transverse magnetic mode. The governing equations, when discretized by the standard piecewise linear finite element method, give rise to a large-scale quadratic eigenvalue problem (QEP). Our numerical simulation shows that half of the positive eigenvalues of the QEP are densely distributed in some interval near the origin. The quadratic JacobiDavidson method with a so-called non-equivalence deflation technique is proposed to compute the dense spectrum of the QEP. Extensive numerical simulations show that our proposed method processes the convergence efficiently, even when it needs to compute more than 5000 desired eigenpairs. A class of upwind flux splitting methods in the Euler equations of compressible flow is considered in this paper. Using the property that Euler flux F(U) is a homogeneous function of degree one in U, we reformulate the splitting fluxes with F^{+}=A^{+} U, F^{-}=A^{-} U, and the corresponding matrices are either symmetric or symmetrizable and keep only non-negative and non-positive eigenvalues. That leads to the conclusion that the first order schemes are positive in the sense of Lax-Liu [18], which implies that it is L^2-stable in some suitable sense. Moreover, the second order scheme is a stable perturbation of the first order scheme, so that the positivity of the second order schemes is also established, under a CFL-like condition. In addition, these splitting methods preserve the positivity of density and energy.
