We present a new stabilization technique for multiscale convection diffusion problems. Stabilization for these problems has been a challenging task, especially for the case with high Peclet numbers. Our method is based on a constraint energy minimization idea and the discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin formulation. In particular, the test functions are constructed by minimizing an appropriate energy subject to certain orthogonality conditions, and are related to the trial space. The resulting test functions have a localization property, and can therefore be computed locally. We will prove the stability, and present several numerical results. Our numerical results confirm that our test space gives a good stability, in the sense that the solution error is close to the best approximation error.

In this paper, we develop and analyze the Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin (RKDG) method to solve weakly coupled hyperbolic multi-domain problems. Such problems involve transfer type boundary conditions with discontinuous fluxes between different domains, calling for special techniques to prove stability of the RKDG methods. We prove both stability and error estimates for our RKDG methods on simple models, and then apply them to a biological cell proliferation model \cite{EMSC}. Numerical results are provided to illustrate the good behavior of our RKDG methods.

We develop a new moving-water equilibria preserving numerical scheme for the Saint-Venant system. The new scheme is designed in two major steps. First, the geometric source term is incorporated into the discharge flux, which results in a hyperbolic system with a global flux. Second, the discharge equation is relaxed so that the nonlinearity is moved into the stiff right-hand side of the added auxiliary equation. The main advantages of the new scheme are that (i) no special treatment of the geometric source term is required, and (ii) no nonlinear (cubic) equations should be solved to obtain the point values of the water depth out of the reconstructed equilibrium variables, as it must be done in the existing alternative methods. We also develop a hybrid numerical flux, which helps to handle various flow regimes in a stable manner. Several numerical experiments are performed to verify that the proposed scheme is capable of exactly preserving general moving-water steady states and accurately capturing their small perturbations.

We study the generalized eigenvalue problems (GEPs) derived from modeling the surface acoustic wave in piezoelectric materials with periodic inhomogeneity. The eigenvalues appear in the reciprocal pairs due to periodic boundary conditions in the modeling. By transforming the GEP into a T-palindromic quadratic eigenvalue problem (TPQEP), the reciprocal relationship of the eigenvalues can be maintained. In this paper, we outline four recently developed structure-preserving algorithms, SA, SDA, TSHIRA and GTSHIRA, for solving the TPQEP. Numerical comparisons on the accuracy and the computational costs of these algorithm are presented. The eigenvalues close to unit circle on the complex plane are of interest in the area of filter and sensor designs. Our numerical results show that the Arnoldi-type structure-preserving algorithms TSHIRA and GTSHIRA with re-symplectic and re-bi-isotropic processes

We introduce and analyze two new semi-discrete numerical methods for the multi-dimensional Vlasov-Poisson system. The schemes are constructed by combing a discontinuous Galerkin approximation to the Vlasov equation together with a mixed finite element method for the Poisson problem. We show optimal error estimates in the case of smooth compactly supported initial data. We propose a scheme that preserves the total energy of the system.
