We provide an affirmative answer to an question that the Fischer-Burmeister complementarity function associated with symmetric cones, named the FB SC complementarity function, is globally Lipschitz continuous and strongly semismooth everywhere for Hn and Qn. This is achieved with the help of embedding Hn and Qn into certain Sm.

As we aim at alleviating the curse of high-dimensionality, subspace learning is becoming more popular. Existing approaches use either information about global or local structure of the data, and few studies simultaneously focus on global and local structures as the both of them contain important information. In this paper, we propose a global and local structure preserving sparse subspace learning (GLoSS) model for unsupervised feature selection. The model can simultaneously realize feature selection and subspace learning. In addition, we develop a greedy algorithm to establish a generic combinatorial model, and an iterative strategy based on an accelerated block coordinate descent is used to solve the GLoSS problem. We make a unified analysis of interior proximal methods of solving convex second-order cone programming problems. These methods use a proximal distance with respect to second-order cones which can be produced with an appropriate closed proper univariate function in three ways. Under some mild conditions, the sequence generated is bounded with each limit point being a solution, and global rates of convergence estimates are obtained in terms of objective values. A class of regularized proximal distances is also constructed which can guarantee the global convergence of the sequence to an optimal solution. These results are illustrated with some examples. In addition, we also study the central paths associated with these distance-like functions, and for the linear SOCP we discuss their relations with the sequence generated by the interior proximal methods. In this paper, we study the properties of the penalized Fischer-Burmeister (FB) second-order cone (SOC) complementarity function. We show that the function possesses similar desirable properties of the FB SOC complementarity function for local convergence; for example, with the function the second-order cone complementarity problem (SOCCP) can be reformulated as a (strongly) semismooth system of equations, and the corresponding nonsmooth Newton method has local quadratic convergence without strict complementarity of solutions. In addition, the penalized FB merit function has bounded level sets under a rather weak condition which can be satisfied by strictly feasible monotone SOCCPs or SOCCPs with the Cartesian <i>R</i> ₀₁-property, although it is not continuously differentiable. Numerical results are included to illustrate the theoretical considerations.

This work combines a level-set approach and the optimal transport-based Wasserstein distance in a data assimilation framework. The primary motivation of this work is to reduce assimilation artifacts resulting from the position and observation error in the tracking and forecast of pollutants present on the surface of oceans or lakes. Both errors lead to spurious effect on the forecast that need to be corrected. In general, the geometric contour of such pollution can be retrieved from observation while more detailed characteristics such as concentration remain unknown. Herein, level sets are tools of choice to model such contours and the dynamical evolution of their topology structures. They are compared with contours extracted from observation using the Wasserstein distance. This allows to better capture position mismatches between both sources compared with the more classical Euclidean distance. Finally, the viability of this approach is demonstrated through academic test cases and its numerical performance is discussed.

Necessary conditions of optimality are derived for multiobjective optimal control problems with free end-time, in which the dynamics constraint is modeled as a nonconvex differential inclusion. The obtained results cover some previous results on necessary conditions for multiojective and single objective optimal control problems.

We consider a class of derivative-free descent methods for solving the second-order cone complementarity problem (SOCCP). The algorithm is based on the FischerBurmeister (FB) unconstrained minimization reformulation of the SOCCP, and utilizes a convex combination of the negative partial gradients of the FB merit function _FB as the search direction. We establish the global convergence results of the algorithm under monotonicity and the uniform Jordan <i>P</i>-property, and show that under strong monotonicity the merit function value sequence generated converges at a linear rate to zero. Particularly, the rate of convergence is dependent on the structure of second-order cones. In this paper, we study the existence of local and global saddle points for nonlinear second-order cone programming problems. The existence of local saddle points is developed by using the second-order sufficient conditions, in which a sigma-term is added to reflect the curvature of second-order cone. Furthermore, by dealing with the perturbation of the primal problem, we establish the existence of global saddle points, which can be applicable for the case of multiple optimal solutions. The close relationship between global saddle points and exact penalty representations are discussed as well.

Let L be the circular cone in R n which includes a second-order cone as a special case. For any function f from R to R, one can define a corresponding vector-valued function f c (x) on R n by applying f to the spectral values of the spectral decomposition of x R n with respect to L . We show that this vector-valued function inherits from f the properties of continuity, Lipschitz continuity, directional differentiability, Frchet differentiability, continuous differentiability, as well as semismoothness. These results will play a crucial role in designing solution methods for optimization problem associated with the circular cone.

In this paper, we consider a class of penalized NCP-functions, which includes several existing well-known NCP-functions as special cases. The merit function induced by this class of NCP-functions is shown to have bounded level sets and provide error bounds under mild conditions. A derivative free algorithm is also proposed, its global convergence is proved and numerical performance compared with those based on some existing NCP-functions is reported.

In this article, we extend two classes of merit functions for the second-order complementarity problem (SOCP) to infinite-dimensional SOCP. These two classes of merit functions include several popular merit functions, which are used in nonlinear complementarity problem, (NCP)/(SDCP) semidefinite complementarity problem, and SOCP, as special cases. We give conditions under which the infinite-dimensional SOCP has a unique solution and show that all these merit functions provide an error bound for infinite-dimensional SOCP and have bounded level sets. These results are very useful for designing solution methods for infinite-dimensional SOCP.

In last decades, there has been much effort on the solution and the analysis of the nonlinear complementarity problem (NCP) by reformulating NCP as an unconstrained minimization involving an NCP function. In this paper, we propose a family of new NCP functions, which include the Fischer-Burmeister function as a special case, based on a <i>p</i>-norm with <i>p</i> being any fixed real number in the interval (1,+), and show several favorable properties of the proposed functions. In addition, we also propose a descent algorithm that is indeed derivative-free for solving the unconstrained minimization based on the merit functions from the proposed NCP functions. In the solution methods of the symmetric cone complementarity problem (SCCP), the squared norm of a complementarity function serves naturally as a merit function for the problem itself or the equivalent system of equations reformulation. In this paper, we study the growth behavior of two classes of such merit functions, which are induced by the smooth EP complementarity functions and the smooth implicit Lagrangian complementarity function, respectively. Recently this author studied several merit functions systematically for the second-order cone complementarity problem. These merit functions were shown to enjoy some favorable properties, to provide error bounds under the condition of strong monotonicity, and to have bounded level sets under the conditions of monotonicity as well as strict feasibility. In this paper, we weaken the condition of strong monotonicity to the so-called uniform <i>P</i> ^*-property, which is a new concept recently developed for linear and nonlinear transformations on Euclidean Jordan algebra. Moreover, we replace the monotonicity and strict feasibility by the so-called <i>R</i> ₀₁ or <i>R</i> ₀₂-functions to keep the property of bounded level sets.

In this paper, we consider a bilevel polynomial optimization problem where the objective and the constraint functions of both the upper-and the lower-level problems are polynomials. We present methods for finding its global minimizers and global minimum using a sequence of semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxations and provide convergence results for the methods. Our scheme for problems with a convex lower-level problem involves solving a transformed equivalent single-level problem by a sequence of SDP relaxations, whereas our approach for general problems involving a nonconvex polynomial lower-level problem solves a sequence of approximation problems via another sequence of SDP relaxations.

In this paper, we address the problem of constraint detection for layout regularization. The layout we consider is a set of two-dimensional elements where each element is represented by its bounding box. Layout regularization is important in digitizing plans or images, such as floor plans and facade images, and in the improvement of user-created contents, such as architectural drawings and slide layouts. To regularize a layout, we aim to improve the input by detecting and subsequently enforcing alignment, size, and distance constraints between layout elements. Similar to previous work, we formulate layout regularization as a quadratic programming problem. In addition, we propose a novel optimization algorithm that automatically detects constraints. Kleinmichel, A new class of semismooth Newton-type methods for nonlinear complementarity problems, Comput. Optim. We consider the Tikhonov regularization method for the second-order cone complementarity problem (SOCCP) with the Cartesian P 0-property. We show that many results of the regularization method for the P 0-nonlinear complementarity problem still hold for this important class of nonmonotone SOCCP. For example, under the more general setting, every regularized problem has the unique solution, and the solution trajectory generated is bounded if the original SOCCP has a nonempty and bounded solution set. We also propose an inexact regularization algorithm by solving the sequence of regularized problems approximately with the merit function approach based on FischerBurmeister merit function, and establish the convergence result of the algorithm. Preliminary numerical results are also reported, which verify the favorable theoretical properties of the proposed method.

This paper is devoted to the study of the proximal point algorithm for solving monotone and nonmonotone nonlinear complementarity problems. The proximal point algorithm is to generate a sequence by solving subproblems that are regularizations of the original problem. After given an appropriate criterion for approximate solutions of subproblems by adopting a merit function, the proximal point algorithm is verified to have global and superlinear convergence properties. For the purpose of solving the subproblems efficiently, we introduce a generalized Newton method and show that only one Newton step is eventually needed to obtain a desired approximate solution that approximately satisfies the appropriate criterion under mild conditions. The motivations of this paper are twofold. One is analyzing the proximal point algorithm based on the generalized Fischer-Burmeister function which includes the Fischer-Burmeister function as special case, another one is trying to see if there are relativistic change on numerical performance when we adjust the parameter in the generalized Fischer-Burmeister.

In this paper, we consider complementarity problem associated with circular cone, which is a type of nonsymmetric cone complementarity problem. The main purpose of this paper is to show the readers how to construct complementarity functions for such nonsymmetric cone complementarity problem, and propose a few merit functions for solving such a complementarity problem. In addition, we study the conditions under which the level sets of the corresponding merit functions are bounded, and we also show that these merit functions provide an error bound for the circular cone complementarity problem. These results ensure that the sequence generated by descent methods has at least one accumulation point, and build up a theoretical basis for designing the merit function method for solving circular cone complementarity problem.
