This paper analyzes the random fluctuations obtained by a heterogeneous multi-scale first-order finite element method applied to solve elliptic equations with a random potential. Several multiscale numerical algorithms have been shown to correctly capture the homogenized limit of solutions of elliptic equations with coefficients modeled as stationary and ergodic random fields. Because theoretical results are available in the continuum setting for such equations, we consider here the case of a secondorder elliptic equations with random potential in two dimensions of space. We show that the random fluctuations of such solutions are correctly estimated by the heterogeneous multi-scale algorithm when appropriate fine-scale problems are solved on subsets that cover the whole computational domain. However, when the fine-scale problems are solved over patches that do not cover the entire domain, the random fluctuations may or may not be estimated accurately. In the case of random potentials with short-range interactions, the variance of the random fluctuations is amplified as the inverse of the fraction of the medium covered by the patches. In the case of random potentials with long-range interactions, however, such an amplification does not occur and random fluctuations are correctly captured independent of the (macroscopic) size of the patches. These results are consistent with those obtained in [9] for more general equations in the one-dimensional setting and provide indications on the loss in accuracy that results from using coarser, and hence computationally less intensive, algorithms.

We consider the problem of the random fluctuations in the solutions to elliptic PDEs with highly oscillatory random coefficients. In our setting, as the correlation length of the fluctuations tends to zero, the heterogeneous solution converges to a deterministic solution obtained by averaging. When the Green’s function to the unperturbed operator is sufficiently singular (i.e., not square integrable locally), the leading corrector to the averaged solution may be either deterministic or random, or both in a sense we shall explain. Our main application is the solution of an elliptic problem with random Robin boundary condition that may be used to model diffusion of signaling molecules through a layer of cells into a bulk of extracellular medium. The problem is then described by an elliptic pseudo-differential operator (a Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator) on the boundary of the domain with random potential. In the physical setting of a three dimensional extracellular medium on top of a two-dimensional surface of cells forming a layer of epithelium, we show that the approximate corrector to averaging consists of a deterministic correction plus a Gaussian field of amplitude proportional to the correlation length of the random medium. The result is obtained under some assumptions on the four-point correlation function in the medium. We provide examples of such random media based on Gaussian and Poisson statistics.

The circular law asserts that the spectral measure of eigenvalues of rescaled random matrices without symmetry assumption converges to the uniform measure on the unit disk. We prove a local version of this law at any point z away from the unit circle. More precisely, if ||z|−1|≥τ for arbitrarily small τ>0, the circular law is valid around z up to scale $N^{-1/2+ \e}$ for any $\e > 0$ under the assumption that the distributions of the matrix entries satisfy a uniform subexponential decay condition.

Let $\widetilde{X}_{M\times N}$ be a rectangular data matrix with independent real-valued entries $[\widetilde{x}_{ij}]$ satisfying $\mathbb {E}\widetilde{x}_{ij}=0$ and $\mathbb {E}\widetilde{x}^2_{ij}=\frac{1}{M}$, $N,M\to\infty$. These entries have a subexponential decay at the tails. We will be working in the regime $N/M=d_N,\lim_{N\to\infty}d_N\neq0,1,\infty$. In this paper we prove the edge universality of correlation matrices ${X}^{\dagger}X$, where the rectangular matrix $X$ (called the standardized matrix) is obtained by normalizing each column of the data matrix $\widetilde{X}$ by its Euclidean norm. Our main result states that asymptotically the $k$-point ($k\geq1$) correlation functions of the extreme eigenvalues (at both edges of the spectrum) of the correlation matrix ${X}^{\dagger}X$ converge to those of the Gaussian correlation matrix, that is, Tracy-Widom law, and, thus, in particular, the largest and the smallest eigenvalues of ${X}^{\dagger}X$ after appropriate centering and rescaling converge to the Tracy-Widom distribution. The asymptotic distribution of extreme eigenvalues of the Gaussian correlation matrix has been worked out only recently. As a corollary of the main result in this paper, we also obtain that the extreme eigenvalues of Gaussian correlation matrices are asymptotically distributed according to the Tracy-Widom law. The proof is based on the comparison of Green functions, but the key obstacle to be surmounted is the strong dependence of the entries of the correlation matrix. We achieve this via a novel argument which involves comparing the moments of product of the entries of the standardized data matrix to those of the raw data matrix. Our proof strategy may be extended for proving the edge universality of other random matrix ensembles with dependent entries and hence is of independent interest.

We consider the Ising model at its critical temperature with external magnetic field ha15/8 on the square lattice with lattice spacing a. We show that the truncated two-point function in this model decays exponentially with a rate independent of a as a ↓ 0. As a consequence, we show exponential decay in the near-critical scaling limit Euclidean magnetization field. For the lattice model with a = 1, the mass (inverse correlation length) is of order h8/15 as h ↓ 0; for the Euclidean field, it equals exactly Ch8/15 for some C. Although there has been much progress in the study of critical scaling limits, results on near-critical models are far fewer due to the lack of conformal invariance away from the critical point. Our arguments combine lattice and continuum FK representations, including coupled conformal loop and measure ensembles, showing that such ensembles can be useful even in the study of near-critical scaling limits. Thus we provide the first substantial application of measure ensembles.
