Community detection is a fundamental problem in social network analysis. It is desirable to have fast community detection algorithm that applicable to large-scale networks we see today and also have reliable community detection results. This paper proposes Spectral Clustering On Ratios-of-eigenvectors (SCORE) as such an algorithm. The algorithm is fast in computation, is applicable to real large networks, and is competitive in real data performance when applied to some representative data sets in this area. We study the algorithm with the Degree-Corrected Block Model (DCBM). Compare to most works in this area that focus on the much narrower Block Models, our analysis is more difficult and requires new techniques. The novelty of our algorithm lies in that it uses entry-wise ratios between leading eigenvectors of the adjacency to reduce a seemingly hard problem to a problem that is very much tractable.

Nonparametric deconvolution problems require one to recover an unknown density when the data are contaminated with errors. Optimal global rates of convergence are found under the weighted <i>L</i>_<i>p</i>loss (1 <i>p</i> ). It appears that the optimal rates of convergence are extremely low for supersmooth error distributions. To resolve this difficulty, we examine how high the noise level can be for deconvolution to be feasible, and for the deconvolution estimate to be as good as the ordinary density estimate. It is shown that if the noise level is not too high, nonparametric Gaussian deconvolution can still be practical. Several simulation studies are also presented.

Using locally polynomial regression, we develop nonparametric estimators for the conditional density function and its square root, and their partial derivatives. Two measures of sensitivity to initial conditions in nonlinear stochastic dynamic systems are proposed, one of which relates Fisher information with initial-value sensitivity in dynamical systems. We propose estimators for these, and show asymptotic normality for one of them. We further propose a simple method for choosing the bandwidth. The methods are illustrated by simulation of two well-known models in dynamical systems.

Ultrahigh-dimensional variable selection plays an increasingly important role in contemporary scientific discoveries and statistical research. Among others, Fan and Lv [JR Stat. Soc. Ser. B Stat. Methodol. 70 (2008) 849911] propose an independent screening framework by ranking the marginal correlations. They showed that the correlation ranking procedure possesses a sure independence screening property within the context of the linear model with Gaussian covariates and responses. In this paper, we propose a more general version of the independent learning with ranking the maximum marginal likelihood estimates or the maximum marginal likelihood itself in generalized linear models.
