Large-scale multiple testing with correlated and heavy-tailed data arises in a wide range of research areas from genomics, medical imaging to finance. Conventional methods for estimating the false discovery proportion (FDP) often ignore the effect of heavy-tailedness and the dependence structure among test statistics, and thus may lead to inefficient or even inconsistent estimation. Also, the assumption of joint normality is often imposed, which is too stringent for many applications. To address these challenges, in this paper we propose a factoradjusted robust procedure for large-scale simultaneous inference with control of the false discovery proportion. We demonstrate that robust factor adjustments are extremely important in both improving the power of the tests and controlling FDP. We identify general conditions under which the proposed method produces consistent estimate of the FDP. As a byproduct that is of independent interest, we establish an exponential-type deviation inequality for a robust U-type covariance estimator under the spectral norm. Extensive numerical experiments demonstrate the advantage of the proposed method over several state-of-the-art methods especially when the data are generated from heavy-tailed distributions. Let K be a knot in an integral homology 3-sphere Y, and Σ the corresponding n-fold cyclic branched cover. Assuming that Σ is a rational homology sphere (which is always the case when n is a prime power), we give a formula for the Lefschetz number of the action that the covering translation induces on the reduced monopole homology of Σ. The proof relies on a careful analysis of the Seiberg--Witten equations on 3-orbifolds and of various η-invariants. We give several applications of our formula: (1) we calculate the Seiberg--Witten and Furuta--Ohta invariants for the mapping tori of all semi-free actions of Z/n on integral homology 3-spheres; (2) we give a novel obstruction (in terms of the Jones polynomial) for the branched cover of a knot in S3 being an L-space; (3) we give a new set of knot concordance invariants in terms of the monopole Lefschetz numbers of covering translations on the branched covers.

In this paper, we apply high-order finite difference (FD) schemes for multispecies and multireaction detonations (MMD). In MMD, the density and pressure are positive and the mass fraction of the ith species in the chemical reaction, say zi, is between 0 and 1, with ∑z_i=1. Due to the lack of maximum-principle, most of the previous bound-preserving technique cannot be applied directly. To preserve those bounds, we will use the positivity-preserving technique to all the z′is and enforce ∑z_i=1 by constructing conservative schemes, thanks to conservative time integrations and consistent numerical fluxes in the system. Moreover, detonation is an extreme singular mode of flame propagation in premixed gas, and the model contains a significant stiff source. It is well known that for hyperbolic equations with stiff source, the transition points in the numerical approximations near the shocks may trigger spurious shock speed, leading to wrong shock position. Intuitively, the high-order weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme, which can suppress oscillations near the discontinuities, would be a good choice for spatial discretization. However, with the nonlinear weights, the numerical fluxes are no longer “consistent”, leading to nonconservative numerical schemes and the bound-preserving technique does not work. Numerical experiments demonstrate that, without further numerical techniques such as subcell resolutions, the conservative FD method with linear weights can yield better numerical approximations than the nonconservative WENO scheme.

We relate previously defined quantum characteristic classes to Morse theoretic aspects of the Hofer length functional on Ham (M, ω). As an application we prove a theorem which can be interpreted as stating that this functional is “virtually” a perfect Morse-Bott functional. This can be applied to study the topology and Hofer geometry of Ham(M, ω). We also use this to give a prediction for the index of some geodesics for this functional, which was recently partially verified by Yael Karshon and Jennifer Slimowitz[5].
