It is known that if the special automorphism group SAut(X) of a quasiaffine variety X of dimension at least 2 acts transitively on X, then this action is infinitely transitive. In this paper we question whether this is the only possibility for the automorphism group Aut(X) to act infinitely transitively on X. We show that this is the case, provided X admits a nontrivial Ga or Gm-action. Moreover, 2-transitivity of the automorphism group implies infinite transitivity.

We propose an algorithm for the state feedback pole assignment problem. The algorithm is the first of its kind, making use of the Schur form and minimizing the departure from normality of the closed-loop poles by Newtons method. Eleven illustrative examples, comparing our algorithm with three other existing ones, are given.

Differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) is a powerful tool for detecting and quantifying trace gases in atmospheric chemistry\cite {Platt_Stutz08}. DOAS spectra consist of a linear combination of complex multi-peak multi-scale structures. Most DOAS analysis routines in use today are based on least squares techniques, for example, the approach developed in the 1970s uses polynomial fits to remove a slowly varying background, and known reference spectra to retrieve the identity and concentrations of reference gases. An open problem is to identify unknown gases in the fitting residuals for complex atmospheric mixtures.

In this paper, we give a complete classification of cotorsion pairs in a cluster category C of type A^\infty_\infty via certain configurations of arcs, called τ-compact Ptolemy diagrams, in an infinite strip with marked points. As applications, we classify t-structures and functorially finite rigid subcategories in C, respectively. We also deduce Liu-Paquette's classification of cluster tilting subcategories of C and Ng's classification of torsion pairs in the cluster category of type A^\infty_\infty.
