Using rearrangements of matrix-valued sequences, we prove that with certain boundary conditions the solution of the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation increases or decreases under monotone rearrangements of its potential.

In this paper, we propose a penalised pseudo-partial likelihood method for variable selection with multivariate failure time data with a growing number of regression coefficients. Under certain regularity conditions, we show the consistency and asymptotic normality of the penalised likelihood estimators. We further demonstrate that, for certain penalty functions with proper choices of regularisation parameters, the resulting estimator can correctly identify the true model, as if it were known in advance. Based on a simple approximation of the penalty function, the proposed method can be easily carried out with the NewtonRaphson algorithm. We conduct extensive Monte Carlo simulation studies to assess the finite sample performance of the proposed procedures. We illustrate the proposed method by analysing a dataset from the Framingham Heart Study.

We present a new estimator for precision matrix in high dimensional Gaussian graphical models. At the core of the proposed estimator is a collection of node-wise linear regression with nonconvex penalty. In contrast to existing estimators for Gaussian graphical models with O (s log d/n) estimation error bound in terms of spectral norm, where s is the maximum degree of a graph, the proposed estimator could attain O (s/ n+ log d/n) spectral norm based convergence rate in the best case, and it is no worse than exiting estimators in general. In addition, our proposed estimator enjoys the oracle property under a milder condition than existing estimators. We show through extensive experiments on both synthetic and real datasets that our estimator outperforms the state-of-the-art estimators.

We consider the Einstein/Yang-Mills equations in 3+ 1 space time dimensions with SU (2) gauge group and prove rigorously the existence of a globally defined smooth static solution. We show that the associated Einstein metric is asymptotically flat and the total mass is finite. Thus, for non-abelian gauge fields the Yang/Mills repulsive force can balance the gravitational attractive force and prevent the formation of singularities in spacetime.

We consider two-stage hybrid protocols that combine quantum resources and classical resources to generate classical correlations shared by two separated players. Our motivation is twofold. First, in the near future, the scale of quantum information processing is quite limited, and when quantum resource available is not sufficient for certain tasks, a possible way to strengthen the capability of quantum schemes is introducing extra classical resources. We analyze the mathematical structures of these hybrid protocols, and characterize the relation between the amount of quantum resources and classical resources needed. Second, a fundamental open problem in communication complexity theory is to describe the advantage of sharing prior quantum entanglement over sharing prior randomness, which is still widely open. It turns out that our quantum and classical hybrid protocols provide new insight into this important problem.
