Let M be the interior of a compact 3-manifold with boundary, and let M be an ideal triangulation of M This paper describes necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of angle structures, semi-angle structures and generalised angle structures on M respectively in terms of a generalised Euler characteristic function on the solution space of the normal surface theory of M This extends previous work of Kang and Rubinstein, and is itself generalised to a more general setting for 3-dimensional pseudo-manifolds.

Based on the existence theory on the Boltzmann equation with external forces in infinite vacuum, in this paper, we will study the L1 and BV-type stability of the classical solutions for small initial data. The stability results generalize those for the Boltzmann equation without force to the case with external force. In particular, we show that the stability can be established for the soft potentials directly, while the stability for the hard potentials and hard sphere model is obtained through the construction of some nonlinear functionals. The functionals thus constructed generalize those constructed in [S.-Y. Ha, Nonlinear functionals of the Boltzmann equation and uniform stability estimates, J. Differential Equations 215 (2005) 178205] for the case without force to capture the effect of the force term on the time evolution of the solutions. 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

We consider Pólya urns with infinitely many colours that are of a random walk type, in two related versions. We show that the colour distribution a.s., after rescaling, converges to a normal distribution, assuming only second moments on the offset distribution. This improves results by Bandyopadhyay and Thacker (2014–2017; convergence in probability), and Mailler and Marckert (2017; a.s. convergence assuming exponential moment).

It is known that weak interactions of two solitary waves in generalized nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations exhibit fractal dependence on initial conditions, and the dynamics of these interactions is governed by a universal two-degree-of-freedom ODE system [Y. Zhu J. Yang, Universal fractal structures in the weak interaction of solitary waves in generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations, Phys. Rev. E 75 (2007) 036605]. In this paper, this ODE system is analyzed comprehensively. Using asymptotic methods along separatrix orbits, a simple second-order map is derived. This map does not have any free parameters after variable rescalings, and thus is universal for all weak interactions of solitary waves in generalized NLS equations. Comparison between this map’s predictions and direct simulations of the ODE system shows that the map can capture the fractal-scattering phenomenon of the ODE system very well both qualitatively and quantitatively.
