It is known that weak interactions of two solitary waves in generalized nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations exhibit fractal dependence on initial conditions, and the dynamics of these interactions is governed by a universal two-degree-of-freedom ODE system [Y. Zhu J. Yang, Universal fractal structures in the weak interaction of solitary waves in generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations, Phys. Rev. E 75 (2007) 036605]. In this paper, this ODE system is analyzed comprehensively. Using asymptotic methods along separatrix orbits, a simple second-order map is derived. This map does not have any free parameters after variable rescalings, and thus is universal for all weak interactions of solitary waves in generalized NLS equations. Comparison between this map’s predictions and direct simulations of the ODE system shows that the map can capture the fractal-scattering phenomenon of the ODE system very well both qualitatively and quantitatively.

In this paper we construct a new time-periodic solution of the vacuum Einsteins field equations, this solution possesses physical singularities, i.e., the norm of the solutions Riemann curvature tensor takes the infinity at some points. We show that this solution is intrinsically time-periodic and describes a time-periodic universe with the time-periodic physical singularity. By calculating the Weyl scalars of this solution, we investigate new physical phenomena and analyze new singularities for this universal model.

Statistical estimation and inference for marginal hazard models with varying coefficients for multivariate failure time data are important subjects in survival analysis. A local pseudo-partial likelihood procedure is proposed for estimating the unknown coefficient functions. A weighted average estimator is also proposed in an attempt to improve the efficiency of the estimator. The consistency and asymptotic normality of the proposed estimators are established and standard error formulas for the estimated coefficients are derived and empirically tested. To reduce the computational burden of the maximum local pseudo-partial likelihood estimator, a simple and useful one-step estimator is proposed. Statistical properties of the one-step estimator are established and simulation studies are conducted to compare the performance of the one-step estimator to that of the maximum local pseudo-partial likelihood estimator. We study the front dynamics of solutions of the initial value problem of the Burgers equation with initial data being the viscous shock front plus the white noise perturbation. In the sense of distribution, the solutions propagate with the same speed as the unperturbed front, however, the front location is random and satisfies a central limit theorem with the variance proportional to the time<i>t</i>, as<i>t</i> goes to infinity. With probability arbitrarily close to one, the front width is<i>O</i>(1) for large time.

We study the super-resolution (SR) problem of recovering point sources consisting of a collection of isolated and suitably separated spikes from only the low frequency measurements. If the peak separation is above a factor in (1,2) of the Rayleigh length (physical resolution limit), L 1 minimization is guaranteed to recover such sparse signals. However, below such critical length scale, especially the Rayleigh length, the L 1 certificate no longer exists. We show several local properties (local minimum, directional stationarity, and sparsity) of the limit points of minimizing two L 1 based nonconvex penalties, the difference of L 1 and L 1 norms ( L 1 ) and capped L 1 (C L 1 ), subject to the measurement constraints.
