We construct a generalized Witten genus for spinc manifolds, which takes values in level 1 modular forms with integral Fourier expansion on a class of spinc manifolds called stringc manifolds. We also construct a mod 2 analogue of the Witten genus for 8k+2 dimensional spin manifolds. The Landweber-Stong type vanishing theorems are proven for the generalizedWitten genus and the mod 2 Witten genus on stringc and string (generalized) complete intersections in (product of) complex projective spaces respectively.

In this paper, we present an efficient computational methodology for diffusion and convection-diffusion problems in highly heterogeneous media as well as convection-dominated diffusion problem. It is well known that the numerical computation for these problems requires a significant amount of computer memory and time. Nevertheless, the solutions to these problems typically contain a coarse component, which is usually the quantity of interest and can be represented with a small number of degrees of freedom. There are many methods that aim at the computation of the coarse component without resolving the full details of the solution. Our proposed method falls into the framework of interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method, which is proved to be an effective and accurate class of methods for numerical solutions of partial differential equations. Generalized linear models and quasi-likelihood method extend the ordinary regression models to accommodate more general conditional distributions of the response. Nonparametric methods need no explicit parametric specification and the resulting model is completely determined by the data themselves. However nonparametric estimation schemes generally have a slower convergence rate such as the local polynomial smoothing estimation of nonparametric generalized linear models studied in Fan, Heckman and Wand (1995). In this work, we propose two parametrically guided nonparametric estimation schemes by incorporating prior shape information on the link transformation of the response variables conditional mean in terms of the predictor variable. Asymptotic results and numerical simulations demonstrate the improvement of our new estimation schemes over the original nonparametric counterpart.

We prove that in the nonextreme KerrNewman black hole geometry, the Dirac equation has no normalizable, timeperiodic solutions. A key tool is Chandrasekhar's separation of the Dirac equation in this geometry. A similar nonexistence theorem is established in a more general class of stationary, axisymmetric metrics in which the Dirac equation is known to be separable. These results indicate that, in contrast to the classical situation of massive particle orbits, a quantum mechanical Dirac particle must either disappear into the black hole or escape to infinity. 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Based on examples from superstring/D-brane theory since the work of Douglas and Moore on resolution of singularities of a superstring target-space Y via a D-brane probe, the richness and the complexity of the stack of punctual D0-branes on a variety, and as a guiding question, we lay down a conjecture that any resolution Y of a variety Y over Y can be factored through an embedding of Y into the stack Y of punctual D0-branes of rank Y on Y for Y in Y , where Y depends on the germ of singularities of Y . We prove that this conjecture holds for the resolution Y of a reduced singular curve Y over Y . In string-theoretical language, this says that the resolution Y of a singular curve Y always arises from an appropriate D0-brane aggregation on Y and that the rank of the Chan-Paton module of the D0-branes involved can be chosen to be arbitrarily large.
