We extend the RayleighRitz method to the eigen-problem of periodic matrix pairs. Assuming that the deviations of the desired periodic eigenvectors from the corresponding periodic subspaces tend to zero, we show that there exist periodic Ritz values that converge to the desired periodic eigenvalues unconditionally, yet the periodic Ritz vectors may fail to converge. To overcome this potential problem, we minimize residuals formed with periodic Ritz values to produce the refined periodic Ritz vectors, which converge under the same assumption. These results generalize the corresponding well-known ones for RayleighRitz approximations and their refinement for non-periodic eigen-problems. In addition, we consider a periodic Arnoldi process which is particularly efficient when coupled with the RayleighRitz method with refinement. Previous studies have shown that fractal scatterings in weak interactions of solitary waves in the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations are described by a universal second-order separatrix map. In this paper, this separatrix map is analyzed in detail, and hence a complete characterization of fractal scatterings in these weak interactions is obtained. In particular, scaling laws of these fractals are derived analytically for different initial conditions, and these laws are confirmed by direct numerical simulations. In addition, an analytical criterion for the occurrence of fractal scatterings is given explicitly.

In this paper, we generalize the Cao-Yau'’s gradient estimate for the sum of squares of vector …elds up to higher step under ssumption of the generalized curvature-dimension inequality. With its applications, by deriving a curvature-dimension inequality, we are able to obtain the Li-Yau gradient estimate for the CR heat equation in a closed pseudohermitian manifold of nonvanishing torsion tensors. As consequences, we obtain the Harnack inequality and upper bound estimate for the CR heat kernel. 1.

Using deformations of singular twistor spaces, a generalisation of the connected sum construction appropriate for quaternionic manifolds is introduced. This is used to construct examples of quaternionic manifolds which have no quaternionic symmetries and leads to examples of quaternionic manifolds whose twistor spaces have arbitrary algebraic dimension.

Let L be the circular cone in R n which includes a second-order cone as a special case. For any function f from R to R, one can define a corresponding vector-valued function f c (x) on R n by applying f to the spectral values of the spectral decomposition of x R n with respect to L . We show that this vector-valued function inherits from f the properties of continuity, Lipschitz continuity, directional differentiability, Frchet differentiability, continuous differentiability, as well as semismoothness. These results will play a crucial role in designing solution methods for optimization problem associated with the circular cone.
