In this paper we will show the Mumford goodness of the metrics on the logarithmic tangent bundle of the moduli spaces of curves induced by the Ricci and the perturbed Ricci metrics. It follows from these estimates that the Ricci metric can be extended to the Deligne-Mumford compactification of the moduli spaces.

Factor modeling is an essential tool for exploring intrinsic dependence structures among high-dimensional random variables. Much progress has been made for estimating the covariance matrix from a high-dimensional factor model. However, the blessing of dimensionality has not yet been fully embraced in the literature: much of the available data are often ignored in constructing covariance matrix estimates. If our goal is to accurately estimate a covariance matrix of a set of targeted variables, shall we employ additional data, which are beyond the variables of interest, in the estimation? In this article, we provide sufficient conditions for an affirmative answer, and further quantify its gain in terms of Fisher information and convergence rate. In fact, even an oracle-like result (as if all the factors were known) can be achieved when a sufficiently large number of variables is used. The idea of using data as much as possible

It is well known that the nonlinear filtering problem has important applications in both military and commercial industries. The central problem of nonlinear filtering is to solve the DMZ equation in real time and memoryless manner. The purpose of this paper is to show that, under very mild conditions (which essentially say that the growth of the observation |h| is greater than the growth of the drift |f|), the DMZ equation admits a unique nonnegative weak solution u which can be approximated by a solution u_R of the DMZ equation on the ball B_R with u_R|_BR = 0. The error of this approximation is bounded by a function of R which tends to zero as R goes to infinity. The solution u_R can in turn be approximated efficiently by an algorithm depending only on solving the observation-independent Kolmogorov equation on B_R. In theory, our algorithm can solve basically all engineering problems in real time manner. Specifically

The advance of technology facilitates the collection of statistical data. Flexible and refined statistical models are widely sought in a large array of statistical problems. The question arises frequently whether or not a family of parametric or nonparametric models fit adequately the given data. In this paper we give a selective overview on nonparametric inferences using generalized likelihood ratio (<i>GLR</i>) statistics. We introduce generalized likelihood ratio statistics to test various null hypotheses against nonparametric alternatives. The trade-off between the flexibility of alternative models and the power of the statistical tests is emphasized. Well-established Wilks phenomena are discussed for a variety of semi- and non-parametric models, which sheds light on other research using <i>GLR</i> tests. Anumber of open topics worthy of further study are given in a discussion section.
