We propose to incorporate a weighted difference of anisotropic and isotropic total variation (TV) norms into a relaxed formulation of the two phase Mumford-Shah (MS) model for image segmentation. We show results exceeding those obtained by the MS model when using the standard TV norm to regularize partition boundaries. In particular, examples illustrating the qualitative differences between the proposed model and the standard MS one are shown. A fast numerical method is introduced to minimize the proposed model utilizing the difference-of-convex algorithm (DCA) and the primal dual hybrid gradient (PDHG) method.

Consider an unstable quantum system that has been found undecayed at an instant s and denote by R(t,s) the rate of its regeneration into an original (undecayed) state at a later instant t+s. It is proved that the reduced evolution is a semigroup, i.e., there is no regeneration at all, provided R(t,s)1/2 can be estimated by a sufficiently regular function that is nondecreasing in s and has zero derivative with respect to t at t=0 for every s. This generalizes the theorem of Misra and Sinha [Helv. Phys. Acta 45, 619 (1972)] in a different direction than in a recent paper by Nishioka [J. Math. Phys. 29, 1860 (1988)].

Let M be a compact Criemannian manifold of nonpositive curvature1 and with fundamental group . It is well known [8, p. 102] that M is a K (, 1) and thus completely determined up to homotopy type by . In light of this fact it is natural to ask to what extent the riemannian structure of M is determined by the structure of , and the intent of this paper is to demonstrate that rather strong implications of this sort exist. In the case that M has strictly negative curvature, the group is known to be highly noncommutative. Every abelian, in fact, every solvable, subgroup of is cyclic [3]. It is therefore a plausible conjecture that in the nonpositive curvature case, will possess large amounts of commutativity only under special geometric circumstances. We shall show that this is true, that indeed those properties of which involve commutativity have a dramatic reflection in the riemannian structure of M.

We consider the Einstein/Yang-Mills equations in 3+1 space time dimensions with<i>SU</i>(2) gauge group and prove rigorously the existence of a globally defined smooth static solution. We show that the associated Einstein metric is asymptotically flat and the total mass is finite. Thus, for non-abelian gauge fields the Yang-Mills repulsive force can balance the gravitational attractive force and prevent the formation of singularities in spacetime.

We introduce the prime density triangle, a multiplicative array constructed by a modified rule of indices. Two display formats are given: a right-angle triangle with converted and unconverted entries, and an equilateral triangle obtained by mirroring the right-angle triangle about the central term xn. We derive the row-sum generat- ing function and provide worked examples using both direct computation and the generating function. Using a four-rule division scheme applied to the unconverted rows we obtain the sequence whose integer parts sum to the magic numbers for two spin orientations. Replacing the repeated end integers by 1,1 yields integer parts that give the standard harmonic oscillator (HO) magic numbers and, in conjunction with the two-spin-orientation nucleon magic numbers, gives precisely the standard nuclear magic numbers 2, 8, 20, 28, 50, 82, 126, 184. Furthermore, digital-root reduc- tion of the converted triangle reveals a distinct “4,9,9” pattern whose diagonals concatenate into large primes, establishing a direct arithmetic link between prime distribution and the symmetry conditions of nuclear shell closures. Subshell filling up to x9, deductions, and evidence from nuclear physics are included.
