We study analytical and numerical properties of the L 1 - L 2 minimization problem for sparse representation of a signal over a highly coherent dictionary. Though the L 1 - L 2 metric is non-convex, it is Lipschitz continuous. The difference of convex algorithm (DCA) is readily applicable for computing the sparse representation coefficients. The L 1 - L 2 minimization appears as an initialization step of DCA. We further integrate DCA with a non-standard simulated annealing methodology to approximate globally sparse solutions. Non-Gaussian random perturbations are more effective than standard Gaussian perturbations for improving sparsity of solutions. The action of the mapping class group of the thrice-punctured projective plane on its GL(2,C) character variety produces an algorithm for generating the simple length spectra of quasi-Fuchsian thrice-punctured projective planes. We apply this algorithm to quasi-Fuchsian representations of the corresponding fundamental group to prove: a sharp upper-bound for the length its shortest geodesic, a McShane identity and the surprising result of non-polynomial growth for the number of simple closed geodesic lengths.

Extriangulated categories were introduced by Nakaoka and Palu by extracting the similarities between exact categories and triangulated categories. A notion of mutation of subcategories in an extriangulated category is defined in this article. Let $\cal A$ be an extension closed subcategory of an extriangulated category $\C$. Then the quotient category $\cal M:=\cal A/\X$ carries naturally a triangulated structure whenever $(\cal A,\cal A)$ forms an $\X$-mutation pair. This result unifies many previous constructions of triangulated quotient categories, and using it gives a classification of thick triangulated subcategories of pretriangulated category $\C/\X$, where $\X$ is functorially finite in $\C$. When $\C$ has Auslander-Reiten translation $\tau$, we prove that for a functorially finite subcategory $\X$ of $\C$ containing projectives and injectives, $\C/\X$ is a triangulated category if and only if $(\C,\C)$ is $\X-$mutation, and if and only if $\tau \underline{\X}=\overline{\X}.$ This generalizes a result by J{\o}rgensen who proved the equivalence between the first and the third conditions for triangulated categories. Furthermore, we show that for such a subcategory $\X$ of the extriangulated category $\C$, $\C$ admits a new extriangulated structure such that $\C$ is a Frobenius extriangulated category. Applications to exact categories and triangulated categories are given. From the applications we present examples that extriangulated categories are neither exact categories nor triangulated categories.\

Varying-coefficient partially linear models are frequently used in statistical modelling, but their estimation and inference have not been systematically studied. This paper proposes a profile least-squares technique for estimating the parametric component and studies the asymptotic normality of the profile least-squares estimator. The main focus is the examination of whether the generalized likelihood technique developed by Fan et al. is applicable to the testing problem for the parametric component of semiparametric models. We introduce the profile likelihood ratio test and demonstrate that it follows an asymptotically 2 distribution under the null hypothesis. This not only unveils a new Wilks type of phenomenon, but also provides a simple and useful method for semiparametric inferences.
