We develop the affine sieve in the context of orbits of congruence subgroups of semisimple groups acting linearly on affine space. In particular, we give effective bounds for the saturation numbers for points on such orbits at which the value of a given polynomial has few prime factors. In many cases these bounds are of the same quality as what is known in the classical case of a polynomial in one variable where the orbit consists of the integers. When the orbit is the set of integral matrices of a fixed determinant, we obtain a sharp result for the saturation number, and thus establish the Zariski density of matrices all of whose entries are prime numbers. Among the key tools used are explicit approximations to the generalized Ramanujan conjectures for such groups, and sharp and uniform counting of points on such orbits when ordered by various norms.

Varying-coefficient partially linear models are frequently used in statistical modelling, but their estimation and inference have not been systematically studied. This paper proposes a profile least-squares technique for estimating the parametric component and studies the asymptotic normality of the profile least-squares estimator. The main focus is the examination of whether the generalized likelihood technique developed by Fan et al. is applicable to the testing problem for the parametric component of semiparametric models. We introduce the profile likelihood ratio test and demonstrate that it follows an asymptotically 2 distribution under the null hypothesis. This not only unveils a new Wilks type of phenomenon, but also provides a simple and useful method for semiparametric inferences. The case of dimension two was proved by Andreotti-Frankel [-7] and the case of dimension three by Mabuchi [18] using the result of Kobayashi-Ochiai [12]. Our method of proof uses harmonic maps and the characterization of the complex projective space obtained by Kobayashi-Ochiai [15]. According to the result of Kobayashi-Ochiai the complex projective space of dimension n is characterized by the fact that its first Chern class equals 2c1 (F) for some 2> n+ 1 and some positive holomorphic line bundle F over it. Since by the result of Bishop-Goldberg [-2] the second Betti number of a compact Kiihler manifold M of positive bisectional curvature is 1, for the Main Theorem it suffices to show that ca (M) is 2 times a generator of H2 (M, 7Z.) for some 2> 1+ dim M. This can be done by proving that a generator of the free part of H2 (M, Z) can be represented by a rational curve, because the tangent bundle of M restricted to the rational curve splits into a direct sum of holomorphic line bundles over the rational curve according to the result of Grothendieck [-11]. The existence of the rational curve is obtained in the following way. According to the result of Sacks-Uhlenbeck [22] and its improved formulation by Meeks-Yau [-19], the infimum of the energies of maps from S 2 to M representing the generator of rcz (M) can be achieved by a sum of stable harmonic maps f~ from S 2 to M (1< i< m). In this paper, we show that any compact K\"ahler manifold homotopic to a compact Riemannian manifold with negative sectional curvature admits a K\"ahler-Einstein metric of general type. Moreover, we prove that, on a compact symplectic manifold $X$ homotopic to a compact Riemannian manifold with negative sectional curvature, for any almost complex structure $J$ compatible with the symplectic form, there is no non-constant $J$-holomorphic entire curve $f:\C\> X$.
