We introduce two exponential-type integrators for the “good” Boussinesq equation. They are of orders one and two, respectively, and they require lower spatial regularity of the solution compared to classical exponential integrators. For the first integrator, we prove first-order convergence in H^r for solutions in H^{r+1} with r>1/2. This new integrator even converges (with lower order) in H^r for solutions in H^r, i.e., without any additional smoothness assumptions. For the second integrator, we prove second-order convergence in H^r for solutions in H^{r+3} with r>1/2 and convergence in L^2 for solutions in H^3. Numerical results are reported to illustrate the established error estimates. The experiments clearly demonstrate that the new exponential-type integrators are favorable over classical exponential integrators for initial data with low regularity.

We construct noncompact solutions to the affine normal flow of hypersurfaces, and show that all ancient solutions must be either ellipsoids (shrinking solitons) or paraboloids (translating solitons). We also provide a new proof of the existence of a hyperbolic affine sphere asymptotic to the boundary of a convex cone containing no lines, which is originally due to Cheng-Yau. The main techniques are local second-derivative estimates for a parabolic Monge-Amp`ere equation modeled on those of Ben Andrews and Guti´errez-Huang, a decay estimate for the cubic form under the affine normal flow due to Ben Andrews, and a hypersurface barrier due to Calabi.

In this paper, we study the Atiyah class and Todd class of the DG manifold $(F[1],d_F)$ corresponding to an integrable distribution $F \subset T_\mathbb{K} M = TM \otimes_{\mathbb{R}} \mathbb{K}$, where $\mathbb{K} = \mathbb{R}$ or $\\mathbb{C}$. We show that these two classes are canonically identical to those of the Lie pair $(T_{\mathbb{K}} M, F)$. As a consequence, the Atiyah class of a complex manifold $X$ is isomorphic to the Atiyah class of the corresponding DG manifold $(T^{0,1}_X[1],\bar{\partial})$. Moreover, if $X$ is a compact K\"{a}hler manifold, then the Todd class of $X$ is also isomorphic to the Todd class of the corresponding DG manifold $(T^{0,1}_X[1],\bar{\partial})$.

This paper is a follow-up of the work [Chen, J.-S.: J. Optimiz. Theory Appl., Submitted for publication (2004)] where an NCP-function and a descent method were proposed for the nonlinear complementarity problem. An unconstrained reformulation was formulated due to a merit function based on the proposed NCP-function. We continue to explore properties of the merit function in this paper. In particular, we show that the gradient of the merit function is globally Lipschitz continuous which is important from computational aspect. Moreover, we show that the merit function is <i>SC</i> ¹ function which means it is continuously differentiable and its gradient is semismooth. On the other hand, we provide an alternative proof, which uses the new properties of the merit function, for the convergence result of the descent method considered in [Chen, J.-S.: J. Optimiz. Theory Appl., Submitted for publication (2004)].
