Varyingcoefficient linear models arise from multivariate nonparametric regression, nonlinear time series modelling and forecasting, functional data analysis, longitudinal data analysis and others. It has been a common practice to assume that the varying coefficients are functions of a given variable, which is often called an <i>index</i>. To enlarge the modelling capacity substantially, this paper explores a class of varyingcoefficient linear models in which the index is unknown and is estimated as a linear combination of regressors and/or other variables. We search for the index such that the derived varyingcoefficient model provides the least squares approximation to the underlying unknown multidimensional regression function. The search is implemented through a newly proposed hybrid backfitting algorithm. The core of the algorithm is the alternating iteration between estimating the index through a onestep scheme

With modern technology, massive data can easily be collected in a form of multiple sets of curves. New statistical challenge includes testing whether there is any statistically significant difference among these sets of curves. In this article we propose some new tests for comparing two groups of curves based on the adaptive Neyman test and the wavelet thresholding techniques introduced earlier by Fan. We demonstrate that these tests inherit the properties outlined by Fan and that they are simple and powerful for detecting differences between two sets of curves. We then further generalize the idea to compare multiple sets of curves, resulting in an adaptive high-dimensional analysis of variance, called HANOVA. Recent proposals for implementation of kernel-based nonparametric curve estimators are seen to be faster than naive direct implementations by factors up into the hundreds. The main ideas behind the two different approaches are made clear. Careful speed comparisons in a variety of settings and using a variety of machines and software are done. Various issues on computational accuracy and stability are also discussed. Our speed tests show that the fast methods are as fast or somewhat faster than methods traditionally considered very fast, such as LOWESS and smoothing splines.

Variable selection in high-dimensional space characterizes many contemporary problems in scientific discovery and decision making. Many frequently-used techniques are based on independence screening; examples include correlation ranking (Fan &amp; Lv, 2008) or feature selection using a two-sample t-test in high-dimensional classification (Tibshirani et al., 2003). Within the context of the linear model, Fan &amp; Lv (2008) showed that this simple correlation ranking possesses a sure independence screening property under certain conditions and that its revision, called iteratively sure independent screening (ISIS), is needed when the features are marginally unrelated but jointly related to the response variable. In this paper, we extend ISIS, without explicit definition of residuals, to a general pseudo-likelihood framework, which includes generalized linear models as a special case. Even in the least-squares setting, the new method improves ISIS by allowing feature deletion in the iterative process. Our technique allows us to select important features in high-dimensional classification where the popularly used two-sample t-method fails. A new technique is introduced to reduce the false selection rate in the feature screening stage. Several simulated and two real data examples are presented to illustrate the methodology.

A method for exploring the structure of populations of complex objects, such as images, is considered. The objects are summarized by feature vectors. The statistical backbone is Principal Component Analysis in the space of feature vectors. Visual insights come from representing the results in the original data space. In an ophthalmological example, endemic outliers motivate the development of a bounded influence approach to PCA.
