The dynamic stability of vortex solutions to the Ginzburg-Landau and nonlinear Schrdinger equations is the basic assumption of the asymptotic particle plus field description of interacting vortices. For the Ginzburg-Landau dynamics we prove that all vortices are asymptotically nonlinearly stable relative to small radial perturbations. Initially finite energy perturbations of vortices decay to zero in<i>L</i> ^<i>p</i>(²) spaces with an algebraic rate as time tends to infinity. We also prove that under general (nonradial) perturbations, the plus and minus one-vortices are linearly dynamically stable in<i>L</i> ²; the linearized operator has spectrum equal to (, 0] and generates a<i>C</i> ₀ semigroup of contractions on<i>L</i> ²(²). The nature of the zero energy point is clarified; it is<i>resonance</i>, a property related to the infinite energy of planar vortices. We consider Hermitian random band matrices $H=(h_{xy})$ on the $d$-dimensional lattice $(\Z/L\Z)^d$. The entries $h_{xy}$ are independent (up to Hermitian conditions) centered complex Gaussian random variables with variances $s_{xy}=\mathbb E|h_{xy}|^2$. The variance matrix $S=(s_{xy})$ has a banded structure so that $s_{xy}$ is negligible if $|x-y|$ exceeds the band width $W$. In dimensions $d\ge 8$, we prove that, as long as $W\ge L^\e$ for a small constant $\e>0$, with high probability most bulk eigenvectors of $H$ are delocalized in the sense that their localization lengths are comparable to $L$. Denote by $G(z)=(H-z)^{-1}$ the Green's function of $H$. For $\im z\gg W^2/L^2$, we also prove a widely used criterion in physics for quantum diffusion of this model, namely, the leading term in the Fourier transform of $\E|G_{xy}(z)|^2$ with respect to $x-y$ is of the form $(\im z + a(p))^{-1}$ for some $a(p)$ quadratic in $p$, where $p$ is the Fourier variable. Our method is based on an expansion of $T_{xy}=|m|^2 \sum_{\alpha}s_{x\alpha}|G_{\alpha y}|^2$ and it requires a self-energy renormalization up to error $W^{-K}$ for any large constant $K$ independent of $W$ and $L$. We expect that this method can be extended to non-Gaussian band matrices.

This paper is devoted to studying an augmented Lagrangian method for solving a class of manifold optimization problems, which have nonsmooth objective functions and non-negative constraints. Under the constant positive linear dependence condition on manifolds, we show that the proposed method converges to a stationary point of the nonsmooth manifold optimization problem. Moreover, we propose a globalized semismooth Newton method to solve the augmented Lagrangian subproblem on manifolds efficiently. The local superlinear convergence of the manifold semismooth Newton method is also established under some suitable conditions. We also prove that the semismoothness on submanifolds can be inherited from that in the ambient manifold. Finally, numerical experiments on compressed modes and (constrained) sparse principal component analysis illustrate the advantages of the proposed method.

In this paper, we present entropy satisfying schemes for solving an integro-differential equation that describes the evolution of a population structured with respect to a continuous trait. In [P.-E. Jabin and G. Raoul, J. Math. Biol., 63 (2011), pp. 493–517] solutions are shown to converge toward the so-called evolutionary stable distribution (ESD) as time becomes large, using the relative entropy. At the discrete level, the ESD is shown to be the solution to a quadratic programming problem and can be computed by any well-established nonlinear programing algorithm. The schemes are then shown to satisfy the entropy dissipation inequality on the set where initial data are positive and the numerical solutions tend toward the discrete ESD in time. An alternative algorithm is presented to capture the global ESD for nonnegative initial data, which is made possible due to the mutation mechanism built into the modified scheme. A series of numerical tests are given to confirm both accuracy and the entropy satisfying property and to underline the efficiency of capturing the large time asymptotic behavior of numerical solutions in various settings.
