We prove that the first Chern form of the moduli space of polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds, with the Hodge metric or the Weil-Petersson metric, represent the first Chern class of the canonical extensions of the tangent bundle to the compactification of the moduli space with normal crossing divisors.

In statistics and machine learning, we are interested in the eigenvectors (or singular vectors) of certain matrices (eg covariance matrices, data matrices, etc). However, those matrices are usually perturbed by noises or statistical errors, either from random sampling or structural patterns. The Davis-Kahan sin theorem is often used to bound the difference between the eigenvectors of a matrix A and those of a perturbed matrix A= A+ E, in terms of l2 norm. We study the rigidity of polyhedral surfaces using variational principles. The action functionals are derived from the cosine laws. The main focus of this paper is on the cosine law for a nontriangular region bounded by three possibly disjoint geodesics. Several of these cosine laws were first discovered and used by Fenchel and Nielsen. By studying the derivative of the cosine laws, we discover a uniform approach to several variational principles on polyhedral surfaces with or without boundary. As a consequence, the work of Penner, Bobenko and Springborn and Thurston on rigidity of polyhedral surfaces and circle patterns are extended to a very general context.

It is shown that every non-compact hyperbolic manifold of finite volume has a finite cover admitting a geodesic ideal triangulation. Also, every hyperbolic manifold of finite volume with non-empty, totally geodesic boundary has a finite regular cover which has a geodesic partially truncated triangulation. The proofs use an extension of a result due to Long and Niblo concerning the separability of peripheral subgroups.

Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) uses the phase data in magnetic resonance signals to visualize a three-dimensional susceptibility distribution by solving the magnetic field to susceptibility inverse problem. Due to the presence of zeros of the integration kernel in the frequency domain, QSM is an ill-posed inverse problem. Although numerous regularization-based models have been proposed to overcome this problem, incompatibility in the field data, which leads to deterioration of the recovery, has not received enough attention. In this paper, we show that the data acquisition process of QSM inherently generates a harmonic incompatibility in the measured local field. Based on this discovery, we propose a novel regularization-based susceptibility reconstruction model with an additional sparsity-based regularization term on the harmonic incompatibility. Numerical experiments show that the proposed method achieves better performance than existing approaches.

We prove that an isoparametric hypersurface with four principal curvatures and multiplicity pair (7,8) is either the one constructed by Ozeki and Takeuchi, or one of the two constructed by Ferus, Karcher, and Mu¨nzner. This completes the classification of isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres that ´E. Cartan initiated in the late 1930s.

We discuss a general parametrization for vertices of quantum graphs and show, in particular, how the 's and 'couplings at an n-edge vertex can be approximated by means of n+ 1 couplings of the type provided the latter are properly scaled.

In this paper, we propose an unfitted Nitsche's method to compute the band structures of phononic crystal with impurities of general geometry. The proposed method does not require the background mesh to fit the interfaces of impurities, and thus avoids the expensive cost of generating body-fitted meshes and simplifies the inclusion of interface conditions in the formulation. The quasi-periodic boundary conditions are handled by the Floquet-Bloch transform, which converts the computation of band structures into an eigenvalue problem with periodic boundary conditions. More importantly, we show the well-posedness of the proposed method using a delicate argument based on the trace inequality, and further prove the convergence by the Babuška-Osborn theory. We achieve the optimal convergence rate at the presence of the impurities of general geometry. We confirm the theoretical results by two numerical examples, and show the capability of the proposed methods for computing the band structures without fitting the interfaces of impurities.
