This paper resolves a number of problems in the perturbation theory of linear operators, linked with the 45-year-old conjecure of M. G. Kreĭn. In particular, we prove that every Lipschitz function is operator-Lipschitz in the Schatten–von Neumann ideals$S$^{$α$}, 1 <$α$< ∞. We solve the Fu-Yau equation for arbitrary dimension and arbitrary slope $\alpha'$. Actually we obtain at the same time a solution of the open case $\alpha'>0$, an improved solution of the known case $\alpha'<0$, and solutions for a family of Hessian equations which includes the Fu-Yau equation as a special case. The method is based on the introduction of a more stringent ellipticity condition than the usual $\Gamma_k$ admissible cone condition, and which can be shown to be preserved by precise estimates with scale.

We prove local existence of smooth solutions for large data and global smooth solutions for small data to the incompressible, resitive, viscous or inviscid Hall-MHD model. We also show a Liouville theorem for the stationary solutions.

We study linear and nonlinear Schrodinger equations defined by fractal measures. Under the assumption that the Laplacian has compact resolvent, we prove that there exists a uniqueness weak solution for a linear Schrodinger equation, and then use it to obtain the existence and uniqueness of weak solution of a nonlinear Schrodinger equation. We prove that for a class of self-similar measures on R with overlaps, the Schrodinger equations can be discretized so that the finite element method can be applied to obtain approximate solutions. We also prove that the numerical solutions converge to the actual solution and obtain the rate of convergence.

The main purpose of the present paper is to investigate the nonlinear stability of viscous shock waves and rarefaction waves for the bipolar VlasovPoissonBoltzmann (VPB) system. To this end, motivated by the micromacro decomposition to the Boltzmann equation in Liu and Yu (Commun Math Phys 246:133179, 2004) and Liu etal. (Physica D 188:178192, 2004), we first set up a new micromacro decomposition around the local Maxwellian related to the bipolar VPB system and give a unified framework to study the nonlinear stability of the basic wave patterns to the system. Then, as applications of this new decomposition, the time-asymptotic stability of the two typical nonlinear wave patterns, viscous shock waves and rarefaction waves are proved for the 1D bipolar VPB system.
