The compressible Euler equations, which govern the gas flow surrounding a solid ball with mass M and frictional damping in n dimensions, t+(u)= 0,(u) t+ (u u)+ P ()=-Mx/| x| n-2u, where , u, P and M are the density, velocity, pressure and mass of the gas, respectively, n 3 is the dimension of x, and > 0 is the frictional constant, are examined. The pressure is assumed to satisfy the law and 12 , K is a positive constant. The existence and non-existence of global smooth solutions are studied for the initial boundary problem of the Euler equations.

This paper deals with a degenerate diffusion Patlak–Keller–Segel system in $n\geq 3$ dimension. The main difference between the current work and many other recent studies on the same model is that we study the diffusion exponent $m=2n/(n+2)$, which is smaller than the usual exponent $m^{*}=2-2/n$ used in other studies. With the exponent $m=2n/(n+2)$, the associated free energy is conformal invariant, and there is a family of stationary solutions $U_{\lambda,x_0}(x)=C(\frac{\lambda} {\lambda^2+|x-x_0|^2})^{\frac{n+2}{2}}$ $\forall \lambda>0$, $x_0\in {\mathbb R}^n$. For radially symmetric solutions, we prove that if the initial data are strictly below $U_{\lambda,0}(x)$ for some $\lambda$, then the solution vanishes in $L^1_{loc}$ as $t\to\infty$; if the initial data are strictly above $U_{\lambda,0}(x)$ for some $\lambda$, then the solution either blows up at a finite time or has a mass concentration at $r=0$ as time goes to infinity. For general initial data, we prove that there is a global weak solution provided that the $L^m$ norm of initial density is less than a universal constant, and the weak solution vanishes as time goes to infinity. We also prove a finite time blow-up of the solution if the $L^m$ norm for initial data is larger than the $L^m$ norm of $U_{\lambda,x_0}(x)$, which is constant independent of $\lambda$ and $x_0$, and the free energy of initial data is smaller than that of $U_{\lambda,x_0}(x)$.

We study the limiting probability distribution of the homogenization error for second order elliptic equations in divergence form with highly oscillatory periodic conductivity coefficients and highly oscillatory stochastic potential. The effective conductivity coefficients are the same as those of the standard periodic homogenization, and the effective potential is given by the mean. We show that the limiting distribution of the random part of the homogenization error, as random elements in proper Hilbert spaces, is Gaussian and can be characterized by the homogenized Green's function, the homogenized solution and the statistics of the random potential. This generalizes previous results in the setting with slowly varying diffusion coefficients, and the current setting with fast oscillations in the differential operator requires new methods to prove compactness of the probability distributions of the random fluctuation.

We revisit the homogenization problem for the Poisson equation in periodically perforated domains with zero Neumann data at the boundary of the holes and prescribed Dirichlet data at the outer boundary. It is known that, if the periodicity of the holes goes to zero but their volume fraction remains fixed and positive, the limit problem is a Dirichlet boundary value problem posed in the domain without the holes, and the effective diffusion coefficients are non-trivially modified; if that volume fraction goes to zero instead, i.e. the holes are dilute, the effective operator remains the Laplacian (that is, unmodified). Our main results contain the study of a "continuity" in those effective models with respect to the volume fraction of the holes and some new convergence rates for homogenization in the dilute setting. Our method explores the classical two-scale expansion ansatz and relies on asymptotic analysis of the rescaled cell problems using layer potential theory.

We prove the existence of the global weak entropy solution to the Doi–Saintillan–Shelley model for active and passive rod-like particle suspensions, which couples a Fokker–Planck equation with the incompressible Navier–Stokes or Stokes equation, under the no-flux boundary conditions, L2(Ω;L1(Sd611))L2(Ω;L1(Sd611)) initial data, and finite initial entropy for the particle distribution function in two and three dimensions. Furthermore, for the model with the Stokes equation, we obtain the global L2(Ω×Sd611)L2(Ω×Sd611) weak solution in two and three dimensions and the uniqueness in two dimension.
