It is known that the singularity in the non-cutoff cross-section of the Boltzmann equation leads to the gain of regularity and a possible gain of weight in the velocity variable. By defining and analyzing a non-isotropic norm which precisely captures the dissipation in the linearized collision operator, we first give a new and precise coercivity estimate for the non-cutoff Boltzmann equation for general physical cross-sections. Then the Cauchy problem for the Boltzmann equation is considered in the framework of small perturbation of an equilibrium state. In this part, for the soft potential case in the sense that there is no positive power gain of weight in the coercivity estimate on the linearized operator, we derive some new functional estimates on the nonlinear collision operator. Together with the coercivity estimates, we prove the global existence of classical solutions for the Boltzmann equation in weighted Sobolev spaces.

We consider the vorticity-stream formulation of axisymmetric incompressible ows and its equivalence with the primitive formulation. It is shown that, to characterize the regularity of a divergence free axisymmetric vector eld in terms of the swirling components, an extra set of pole condition is necessary to give a full description of the regularity. In addition, smooth solutions up to the axis of rotation gives rise to smooth solutions of primitive formulation in the case of Navier-Stokes equations, but not the Euler equations. We also establish proper weak formulations and show its equivalence to Leray's solutions.

We study the residual diffusion phenomenon in chaotic advection computationally via adaptive orthogonal basis. The chaotic advection is generated by a class of time periodic cellular flows arising in modeling transition to turbulence in Rayleigh-Bnard experiments. The residual diffusion refers to the non-zero effective (homogenized) diffusion in the limit of zero molecular diffusion as a result of chaotic mixing of the streamlines. In this limit, the solutions of the advection-diffusion equation develop sharp gradients, and demand a large number of Fourier modes to resolve, rendering computation expensive. We construct adaptive orthogonal basis (training) with built-in sharp gradient structures from fully resolved spectral solutions at few sampled molecular diffusivities. We consider the nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation with a defocusing nonlinearity which is mass-(super)critical and energy-subcritical. We prove uniform in time error estimates for the Lie-Trotter time splitting discretization. This uniformity in time is obtained thanks to a vectorfield which provides time decay estimates for the exact and numerical solutions. This vectorfield is classical in scattering theory, and requires several technical modifications compared to previous error estimates for splitting methods.
