We study the residual diffusion phenomenon in chaotic advection computationally via adaptive orthogonal basis. The chaotic advection is generated by a class of time periodic cellular flows arising in modeling transition to turbulence in Rayleigh-Bnard experiments. The residual diffusion refers to the non-zero effective (homogenized) diffusion in the limit of zero molecular diffusion as a result of chaotic mixing of the streamlines. In this limit, the solutions of the advection-diffusion equation develop sharp gradients, and demand a large number of Fourier modes to resolve, rendering computation expensive. We construct adaptive orthogonal basis (training) with built-in sharp gradient structures from fully resolved spectral solutions at few sampled molecular diffusivities. We study the convergence rate of Glimm scheme for general systems of hyperbolic conservation laws without the assumption that each characteristic field is either genuinely nonlinear or linearly degenerate. We first give a sharper estimate of the error arising from the wave tracing argument by a careful analysis of the interaction between small waves. With this key estimate, the convergence rate is shown to be o (1) s 1 3| ln s| 1+ , which is sharper compared to o (1) s 1 4| ln s| given in [T. In biological transport mechanisms such as insect respiration and renal filtration, fluid travels along a leaky channel allowing material exchange with systems exterior to the channel. The channels in these systems may undergo peristaltic pumping which is thought to enhance the material exchange. To date, little analytic work has been done to study the effect of pumping on material extraction across the channel walls. In this paper, we examine a fluid extraction model in which fluid flowing through a leaky channel is exchanged with fluid in a reservoir. The channel walls are allowed to contract and expand uniformly, simulating a pumping mechanism. In order to efficiently determine solutions of the model, we derive a formal power series solution for the Stokes equations in a finite channel with uniformly contracting/expanding permeable walls. This flow has been well studied in the case in which the normal velocity at the channel walls is proportional to the wall velocity. In contrast we do not assume flow that is proportional to the wall velocity, but flow that is driven by hydrostatic pressure, and we use Darcy’s law to close our system for normal wall velocity. We incorporate our flow solution into a model that tracks the material pressure exterior to the channel. We use this model to examine flux across the channel-reservoir barrier and demonstrate that pumping can either enhance or impede fluid extraction across channel walls. We find that associated with each set of physical flow and pumping parameters, there are optimal reservoir conditions that maximize the amount of material flowing from the channel into the reservoir.

We present and analyze two numerical methods for the logarithmic Schrödinger equation (LogSE) consisting of a regularized splitting method and a regularized conservative Crank–Nicolson finite difference method (CNFD). In order to avoid numerical blow-up and/or to suppress round-off error due to the logarithmic nonlinearity in the LogSE, a regularized logarithmic Schrödinger equation (RLogSE) with a small regularized parameter 0<ε≪1 is adopted to approximate the LogSE with linear convergence rate O(ε). Then we use the Lie–Trotter splitting integrator to solve the RLogSE and establish its error bound O(τ^{1/2}ln(ε^{−1})) with τ>0 the time step, which implies an error bound at O(ε+τ^{1/2}ln(ε^{−1})) for the LogSE by the Lie–Trotter splitting method. In addition, the CNFD is also applied to discretize the RLogSE, which conserves the mass and energy in the discretized level. Numerical results are reported to confirm our error bounds and to demonstrate rich and complicated dynamics of the LogSE.
