We study detecting a boundary corrosion damage in the inaccessible part of a rectangular shaped electrostatic conductor from a one set of Cauchy data specied on an accessible boundary part of conductor. For this nonlinear ill-posed problem, we prove the uniqueness in a very general framework. Then we establish the conditional stability of Holder type based on some a priori assumptions on the unknown impedance and the electrical current input specied in the accessible part. Finally a regularizing scheme of double regularizing parameters, using the truncation of the series expansion of the solution, is proposed with the convergence analysis on the explicit regularizing solution in terms of a practical average norm for measurement data.

The Boltzmann equation without Grads angular cutoff assumption is believed to have a regularizing effect on the solutions because of the non-integrable angular singularity of the cross-section. However, even though this has been justified satisfactorily for the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation, it is still basically unsolved for the spatially inhomogeneous Boltzmann equation. In this paper, by sharpening the coercivity and upper bound estimates for the collision operator, establishing the hypo-ellipticity of the Boltzmann operator based on a generalized version of the uncertainty principle, and analyzing the commutators between the collision operator and some weighted pseudo-differential operators, we prove the regularizing effect in all (time, space and velocity) variables on the solutions when some mild regularity is imposed on these solutions. In the paper, we study the Prandtl system with initial data admitting non-degenerate critical points. For any index \sigma\in [3/2, 2], we obtain the local in time well-posedness in the space of Gevrey class \sigma\in [3/2, 2], in the tangential variable and Sobolev class in the normal variable so that the monotonicity condition on the tangential velocity is not needed to overcome the loss of tangential derivative. This answers the open question raised in the paper of D. Grard-Varet and N. Masmoudi [{\it Ann. Sci. c. Norm. Supr}.(4) 48 (2015), no. 6, 1273-1325], in which the case \sigma\in [3/2, 2], is solved.

For the class of graph-directed self-similar measures on R, which could have overlaps but are essentially of finite type, we set up a framework for deriving a closed formula for the spectral dimension of the Laplacians defined by these measures. For the class of finitely ramified graph-directed self-similar sets, the spectral dimension of the associated Laplace operators has been obtained by Hambly and Nyberg [6]. The main novelty of our results is that the graph-directed self-similar measures we consider do not need to satisfy the graph open set condition.
