In this paper, we study the Pontryagin numbers of 24 dimensional String manifolds. In partic- ular, we find representatives of an integral basis of the String cobrodism group at dimension 24, based on the work of Mahowald and Hopkins (The structure of 24 dimensional manifolds having normal bundles which lift to B O [8], from “Recent progress in homotopy theory” (D. M. Davis, J. Morava, G. Nishida, W. S. Wilson, N. Yagita, editors), Contemp. Math. 293, Amer. Math. Soc., Providence, RI, 89-110, 2002), Borel and Hirzebruch (Am J Math 80: 459–538, 1958) and Wall (Ann Math 75:163–198, 1962). This has immediate applications on the divisibility of various characteristic numbers of the manifolds. In particular, we establish the 2-primary divisibilities of the signature and of the modified signature coupling with the integral Wu class of Hopkins and Singer (J Differ Geom 70:329–452, 2005), and also the 3- primary divisibility of the twisted signature. Our results provide potential clues to understand a question of Teichner.

In this paper we survey certain aspects of the classical Weil-Petersson metric and its generalizations. Being a natural L^2 metric on the parameter space of a family of complex manifolds or holomorphic vector bundles which admit some canonical metrics, the Weil-Petersson metric is well defined when the automorphism group of each fiber is discrete and the curvature of the Weil-Petersson metric can be computed via certain integrals over each fiber. We will discuss the case when these fibers have continuous automorphism groups. We also discuss the relation between the Weil-Petersson metric and energy of harmonic maps.

Being inspired by a work of Curtis T. McMullen about a very impressive automorphism of a K3 surface of Picard number zero, we shall clarify the structure of the bimeromorphic automorphism group of a non-projective hyperk¨ahler manifold, up to finite group factor.

Let T be the Teichm¨uller space of marked genus g, n punctured Riemann surfaces with its bordification T the augmented Teichm ¨uller space of marked Riemann surfaces with nodes, [Abi77,Ber74]. Provided with the WP metric, T is a complete CAT(0) metric space, [DW03,Wol03, Yam04]. An invariant of a marked hyperbolic structure is the length ℓ of the geodesic α in a free homotopy class. A basic feature of Teichm¨uller theory is the interplay of two-dimensional hyperbolic geometry, Weil-Petersson (WP) geometry and the behavior of geodesic-length functions. Our goal is to develop an understanding of the intrinsic local WP geometry through a study of the gradient and Hessian of geodesic-length functions. Considerations include expansions for the WP pairing of gradients, expansions for the Hessian and covariant derivative, comparability models for the WP metric, as well as the behavior of WP geodesics, including a description of the Alexandrov tangent cone at the augmentation. Approximations and applications for geodesics close to the augmentation are developed. An application for fixed points of group actions is described. Bounding configurations and functions on the hyperbolic plane is basic to our approach. Considerations include analyzing the orbit of a discrete group of isometries and bounding sums of the inverse square exponential-distance.

The image of the Gauss map of any oriented isoparametric hypersurface in the standard unit sphere $S^{n+1}(1)$ is a minimal Lagrangian submanifold in the complex hyperquadric $Q_n(\mathbb{C})$. In this paper we show that the Gauss image of a compact oriented isoparametric hypersurface with $g$ distinct constant principal curvatures in $S^{n+1}(1)$ is a compact monotone and cyclic embedded Lagrangian submanifold with minimal Maslov number $2n/g$. We obtain the Hamiltonian stability of the Gauss images of homogeneous isoparametric hypersurfaces of classical type with $g = 4$. Combining with our results in [25] and [27], we completely determine the Hamiltonian stability of the Gauss images of all homogeneous isoparametric hypersurfaces.
