In this paper, we prove that, a compact complex manifold $X$ admits a smooth Hermitian metric with positive (resp., negative) scalar curvature if and only if $K_X$ (resp., $K_X^{-1}$) is not pseudo-effective. On the contrary, we also show that on an arbitrary compact complex manifold $X$ with complex dimension $\geq 2$, there exist smooth Hermitian metrics with positive total scalar curvature, and one of the key ingredients in the proof relies on a recent solution to the Gauduchon conjecture by G. Székelyhidi, V. Tosatti, and B. Weinkove.

H. Hopf showed that the only constant mean curvature sphere S2 immersed in R3 is the round sphere. The K¨ahler framework is an adequate approach to generalize Hopf’ s theorem to higher dimensions. When ϕ : M → Rn is an isometric immersion from a K¨ahler manifold, the complexified second fundamental form α splits according to types. The (1, 1) part of the second fundamental form plays the role of the mean curvature for surfaces and will be called the pluri-mean curvature pmc. Therefore isometric immersions with parallel pluri-mean curvature (ppmc isometric immersions) generalize in a natural way the cmc immersions. It is a standard fact that R8 is the smallest space where CP2 can be embedded. The aim of this work is to generalize Hopf’s theorem proving in particular that the only ppmc isometric immersion from CP2 into R8 is the standard immersion.

Let be the scattering relation on a compact Riemannian manifold M with non-necessarily convex boundary, that maps initial points of geodesic rays on the boundary and initial directions to the outgoing point on the boundary and the outgoing direction. Let . be the length of that geodesic ray. We study the question of whether the metric g is uniquely determined, up to an isometry, by knowledge of 冃 and . restricted on some subset D. We allow possible conjugate points but we assume that the conormal bundle of the geodesics issued from D covers T M; and that those geodesics have no conjugate points. Under an additional topological assumption, we prove that 冃 and . restricted to D uniquely recover an isometric copy of g locally near generic metrics, and in particular, near real analytic ones.

Let X be a smooth affine surface, X ! G2 m be a finite morphism. We study the affine curves on X, with bounded genus and number of points at infinity, obtaining bounds for their degree in terms of Euler characteristic. A typical example where these bounds hold is represented by the complement of a three-component curve in the projective plane, of total degree at least 4. The corresponding results may be interpreted as bounding the height of integral points on X over a function field. In the language of Diophantine Equations, our results may be rephrased in terms of bounding the height of the solutions of f(u, v, y) = 0, with u, v, y over a function field, u, v S-units. It turns out that all of this contain some cases of a strong version of a conjecture of Vojta over function fields in the split case. Moreover, our method would apply also to the nonsplit case. We remark that special cases of our results in the holomorphic context were studied by M. Green already in the seventies, and recently in greater generality by Noguchi, Winkelmann, and Yamanoi [12]; however, the algebraic context was left open and seems not to fall in the existing techniques.
