Let K be a knot in an integral homology 3-sphere Y, and Σ the corresponding n-fold cyclic branched cover. Assuming that Σ is a rational homology sphere (which is always the case when n is a prime power), we give a formula for the Lefschetz number of the action that the covering translation induces on the reduced monopole homology of Σ. The proof relies on a careful analysis of the Seiberg--Witten equations on 3-orbifolds and of various η-invariants. We give several applications of our formula: (1) we calculate the Seiberg--Witten and Furuta--Ohta invariants for the mapping tori of all semi-free actions of Z/n on integral homology 3-spheres; (2) we give a novel obstruction (in terms of the Jones polynomial) for the branched cover of a knot in S3 being an L-space; (3) we give a new set of knot concordance invariants in terms of the monopole Lefschetz numbers of covering translations on the branched covers.

The centroaffine Minkowski problem is studied, which is the critical case of the <i>L</i>_<i>p</i>-Minkowski problem. It admits a variational structure that plays an important role in studying the existence of solutions. In this paper, we find that there is generally no maximizer of the corresponding functional for the centroaffine Minkowski problem.

In this article we define new flows on the Hitchin components for PGL(V). Special examples of these flows are associated to simple closed curves on the surface and give generalized twist flows. Other examples, so called eruption flows, are associated to pair of pants in S and capture new phenomena which are not present in the case when n=2. We determine a global coordinate system on the Hitchin component. Using the computation of the Goldman symplectic form on the Hitchin component, that is developed by two of the authors in a companion paper to this article (Sun and Zhang in The Goldman symplectic form on the PGL(V)-Hitchin component, 2017. arXiv:1709.03589), this gives a global Darboux coordinate system on the Hitchin component.

Two Dehn surgeries on a knot are called purely cosmetic, if they yield manifolds that are homeomorphic as oriented manifolds. Suppose there exist purely cosmetic surgeries on a knot in S^3, we show that the two surgery slopes must be the opposite of each other. One ingredient of our proof is a Dehn surgery formula for correction terms in Heegaard Floer homology.
