It is well-known that sparse grid algorithm has been widely accepted as an efficient tool to overcome the “curse of dimensionality" in some degree. In this note, we give the error estimate of hyperbolic cross (HC) approximations with all sorts of Askey polynomials. These polynomials are useful in generalized polynomial chaos (gPC) in the field of uncertainty quantification. The exponential convergences in both regular and optimized HC approximations have been shown under the condition that the random variable depends on the random inputs smoothly in some degree. Moreover, we apply gPC to numerically solve the ordinary differential equations with slightly higher dimensional random inputs. Both regular and optimized HC have been investigated with Laguerre-chaos, Charlier-chaos and Hermite-chaos in the numerical experiment. The discussion of the connection between the standard ANOVA approximation and Galerkin approximation is in the appendix.

High order path-conservative schemes have been developed for solving nonconservative hyperbolic systems. Recently, it has been observed that this approach may have some computational issues and shortcomings. In this paper, a modification to the high order path-conservative scheme in is proposed to improve its computational performance and to overcome some of the shortcomings. This modification is based on the high order finite volume WENO scheme with subcell resolution and it uses an exact Riemann solver to catch the right paths at the discontinuities. An application to one-dimensional compressible two-medium flows of nonconservative or primitive Euler equations is carried out to show the effectiveness of this new approach.

This is an extension of our earlier work \cite{DS} in which a high order stable method was constructed for solving hyperbolic conservation laws on arbitrarily distributed point clouds. %The initial condition is given on such a point cloud, %and the algorithm solves for point values of the solution at %later time also on this point cloud. An algorithm of building a suitable polygonal mesh based on the random points was given and the traditional discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method was adopted on the constructed polygonal mesh. Numerical results in \cite{DS} show that the current scheme will generate spurious numerical oscillations when dealing with solutions containing strong shocks. In this paper, we adapt a simple weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) limiter, originally designed for DG schemes on two-dimensional unstructured triangular meshes \cite{ZZSQ}, to our high order method on polygonal meshes. The objective of this simple WENO limiter is to simultaneously maintain uniform high order accuracy of the original method in smooth regions and control spurious numerical oscillations near discontinuities. The WENO limiter we adopt is particularly simple to implement and will not harm the conservativeness and compactness of the original method. Moreover, we also extend the maximum-principle-satisfying limiter for the scalar case and the positivity-preserving limiter for the Euler system to our method. Numerical results for both scalar equations and Euler systems of compressible gas dynamics are provided to illustrate the good behavior of these limiters.

This paper proposes and analyzes arbitrarily high-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) and finite volume methods which provably preserve the positivity of density and pressure for the ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) on general meshes. Unified auxiliary theories are built for rigorously analyzing the positivity-preserving (PP) property of numerical MHD schemes with a Harten–Lax–van Leer (HLL) type flux on polytopal meshes in any space dimension. The main challenges overcome here include establishing certain relation between the PP property and a discrete divergence of magnetic field on general meshes, and estimating proper wave speeds in the HLL flux to ensure the PP property. In the 1D case, we prove that the standard DG and finite volume methods with the proposed HLL flux are PP, under a condition accessible by a PP limiter. For the multidimensional conservative MHD system, the standard DG methods with a PP limiter are not PP in general, due to the effect of unavoidable divergence error in the magnetic field. We construct provably PP high-order DG and finite volume schemes by proper discretization of the symmetrizable MHD system, with two divergence-controlling techniques: the locally divergence-free elements and suitably discretized Godunov–Powell source term. The former technique leads to zero divergence within each cell, while the latter controls the divergence error across cell interfaces. Our analysis reveals in theory that a coupling of these two techniques is very important for positivity preservation, as they exactly contribute the discrete divergence terms which are absent in standard multidimensional DG schemes but crucial for ensuring the PP property. Several numerical tests further confirm the PP property and the effectiveness of the proposed PP schemes. Unlike the conservative MHD system, the exact smooth solutions of the symmetrizable MHD system are proved to retain the positivity even if the divergence-free condition is not satisfied. Our analysis and findings further the understanding, at both discrete and continuous levels, of the relation between the PP property and the divergence-free constraint.

The main purpose of this paper is to study the stability and error estimates of the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) methods coupled with multi-step implicit-explicit (IMEX) time discretization schemes, for solving time-dependent incompressible fluid flows. We will give theoretical analysis for the Oseen equation, and assess the performance of the schemes for incompressible Navier-Stokes equations numerically. For the Oseen equation, using first order IMEX time discretization as an example, we show that the IMEX-LDG scheme is unconditionally stable for $\Qcal_k$ elements on cartesian meshes, in the sense that the time-step $\dt$ is only required to be {bounded from above} by a positive constant independent of the spatial mesh size $h$. Furthermore, by the aid of the \emph{Stokes projection} and an elaborate energy analysis, we obtain the $L^{\infty}(L^2)$ optimal error estimates for both the velocity and the stress (gradient of velocity), in both space and time. By the \emph{inf-sup} argument, we also obtain the $L^{\infty}(L^2)$ optimal error estimates for the pressure. Numerical experiments are given to validate our main results.
