We present a uniformly first order accurate numerical method for solving the Klein-Gordon-Zakharov (KGZ) system with two dimensionless parameters 0 < ε ≤ 1 and 0 <γ ≤ 1, which are inversely proportional to the plasma frequency and the acoustic speed, respectively. In the simultaneous high-plasma-frequency and subsonic limit regime, i.e. ε < γ → 0+, the KGZ system collapses to a cubic Schrödinger equation, and the solution propagates waves with O ( ε2)-wavelength in time and meanwhile contains rapid outgoing initial layers with speed O (1/ γ ) in space due to the incompatibility of the initial data. By presenting a multiscale decomposition of the KGZ system, we propose a multiscale time integrator Fourier pseudospectral method which is explicit, efficient and uniformly accurate for solving the KGZ system for all 0 < ε < γ ≤ 1. Numerical results are reported to show the efficiency and accuracy of scheme. Finally, the method is applied to investigate the convergence rates of the KGZ system to its limiting models when ε < γ → 0+.

In this paper, we develop and analyze the Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin (RKDG) method to solve weakly coupled hyperbolic multi-domain problems. Such problems involve transfer type boundary conditions with discontinuous fluxes between different domains, calling for special techniques to prove stability of the RKDG methods. We prove both stability and error estimates for our RKDG methods on simple models, and then apply them to a biological cell proliferation model \cite{EMSC}. Numerical results are provided to illustrate the good behavior of our RKDG methods.

In this paper, we develop high-order bound-preserving (BP) discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for the coupled system of compressible miscible displacements on triangular meshes. We consider the problem with multi-component fluid mixture and the (volumetric) concentration of the $j$th component, $c_j$, should be between 0 and 1. There are three main difficulties. Firstly, $c_j$ does not satisfy a maximum-principle. Therefore, the numerical techniques introduced in (X. Zhang and C.-W. Shu, Journal of Computational Physics, 229 (2010), 3091-3120) cannot be applied directly. The main idea is to apply the positivity-preserving techniques to all $c_j's$ and enforce $\sum_jc_j=1$ simultaneously to obtain physically relevant approximations. By doing so, we have to treat the time derivative of the pressure $dp/dt$ as a source in the concentration equation and choose suitable fluxes in the pressure and concentration equations. Secondly, it is not easy to construct first-order numerical fluxes for interior penalty DG methods on triangular meshes. One of the key points in the high-order BP technique applied in this paper is the combination of high-order and lower-order numerical fluxes. We will construct second-order BP schemes and use the second-order numerical fluxes as the lower-order one. Finally, the classical slope limiter cannot be applied to $c_j$. To construct the BP technique, we will not approximate $c_j$ directly. Therefore, a new limiter will be introduced. Numerical experiments will be given to demonstrate the high-order accuracy and good performance of the numerical technique.

We study the generalized eigenvalue problems (GEPs) derived from modeling the surface acoustic wave in piezoelectric materials with periodic inhomogeneity. The eigenvalues appear in the reciprocal pairs due to periodic boundary conditions in the modeling. By transforming the GEP into a T-palindromic quadratic eigenvalue problem (TPQEP), the reciprocal relationship of the eigenvalues can be maintained. In this paper, we outline four recently developed structure-preserving algorithms, SA, SDA, TSHIRA and GTSHIRA, for solving the TPQEP. Numerical comparisons on the accuracy and the computational costs of these algorithm are presented. The eigenvalues close to unit circle on the complex plane are of interest in the area of filter and sensor designs. Our numerical results show that the Arnoldi-type structure-preserving algorithms TSHIRA and GTSHIRA with re-symplectic and re-bi-isotropic processes

This paper presents a least-squares finite element method for linear Phan-Thien–Tanner(PTT) viscoelastic fluid flows. We consider stabilized weights in the LS method for the viscoelastic model and prove that the LS approximation converges to the linearized solutions of the linear PTT model; the convergence is at the optimal rate for the velocity in the H1-norm and at suboptimal rates for the stress and pressure in the L2-norm, respectively. For numerical experiments, we first consider the flow through a planar channel to illustrate our theoretical results. The LS method is then applied to a flow through the slot channel with two depth ratios and the effects of physical parameters are discussed. Numerical solutions of the channel problem indicate that flow characteristics of the viscoelastic polymer solution are described by the results obtained using the method. Furthermore, we present the hole pressure for various Weissenberg numbers, and compare with that derived from the Higashitani–Pritchard (HP) theory.
