In this paper, we present a discontinuous Galerkin method with staggered hybridization to discretize a class of nonlinear Stokes equations in two dimensions. The utilization of staggered hybridization is new and this approach combines the features of traditional hybridization method and staggered discontinuous Galerkin method. The main idea of our method is to use hybrid variables to impose the staggered continuity conditions instead of enforcing them in the approximation space. Therefore, our method enjoys some distinctive advantages, including mass conservation, optimal convergence and preservation of symmetry of the stress tensor. We will also show that, one can obtain superconvergent and strongly divergence-free velocity by applying a local postprocessing technique on the approximate solution. We will analyze the stability and derive a priori error estimates of the proposed scheme. The resulting nonlinear system is solved by using the Newton’s method, and some numerical results will be demonstrated to confirm the theoretical rates of convergence and superconvergence.

In this paper, we construct an adaptive multiscale method for solving H(curl)-elliptic problems in highly heterogeneous media. Our method is based on the generalized multiscale finite element method. We will first construct a suitable snapshot space, and a dimensional reduction procedure to identify important modes of the solution. We next develop and analyze an a posteriori error indicator, and the corresponding adaptive algorithm. In addition, we will construct a coupled offlineonline adaptive algorithm, which provides an adaptive strategy to the selection of offline and online basis functions. Our theory shows that the convergence is robust with respect to the heterogeneities and contrast of the media. We present several numerical results to illustrate the performance of our method.

Hoogendoorn and Bovy (Transportation Research Part B, 2004, 38(7), 571--592) developed an approach for a pedestrian user-optimal dynamic assignment in continuous time and space. Although their model was proposed for pedestrian traffic, it can also be applied to urban cities. The model is very general, and consists of a conservation law (CL) and a Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation that contains a minimum value problem. However, only an isotropic application example was given in their paper. We claim that the HJB equation is difficult to compute numerically in an anisotropic case. To overcome this, we reformulate their model for a dense urban city that is arbitrary in shape and has a single central business district (CBD). In our model, the minimum value problem is only used in the CL portion, and the HJB equation reduces to a Hamilton-Jacobi (HJ) equation for easier computation. The dynamic path equilibrium of our model is proven in a different way from theirs, and a numerical algorithm is also provided to solve the model. Finally, we show a numerical example under the anisotropic case and compare the results with those of the isotropic case.

We consider an inverse problem of recovering a time-dependent factor of an unknown source on some subboundary for a diffusion equation with time fractional derivative by nonlocal measurement data. Such fractional-order equations describe anomalous diffusion of some contaminants in heterogeneous media such as soil and model the contamination process from an unknown source located on a part of the boundary of the concerned domain. For this inverse problem, we firstly establish the well-posedness in some Sobolev space. Then we propose two regularizing schemes in order to reconstruct an unknown boundary source stably in terms of the noisy measurement data. The first regularizing scheme is based on an integral equation of the second kind which an unknown boundary source solves, and we prove a convergence rate of regularized solutions with a suitable choice strategy of the regularizing parameter. The second regularizing scheme relies directly on discretization by the radial basis function for the initial-boundary value problem for fractional diffusion equation, and we carry out numerical tests, which show the validity of our proposed regularizing scheme.

This paper is devoted to developing and analysing a highly accurate conservative method for solving the quantum Zakharov system. The scheme is based on a linearly-implicit compact finite difference discretization and conserve the mass as well as energy in discrete level. Detailed numerical analysis is presented which shows the method is fourth-order accurate in space and second-order accurate in time. Several numerical examples are reported to confirm the conservation properties and high accuracy of the proposed scheme. Finally the compact scheme is applied to study the convergence rate of the quantum Zakharov system to its limiting model in the semi-classical limit.
