Large-scale multiple testing with correlated and heavy-tailed data arises in a wide range of research areas from genomics, medical imaging to finance. Conventional methods for estimating the false discovery proportion (FDP) often ignore the effect of heavy-tailedness and the dependence structure among test statistics, and thus may lead to inefficient or even inconsistent estimation. Also, the commonly imposed joint normality assumption is arguably too stringent for many applications. To address these challenges, in this article we propose a factor-adjusted robust multiple testing (FarmTest) procedure for large-scale simultaneous inference with control of the FDP. We demonstrate that robust factor adjustments are extremely important in both controlling the FDP and improving the power. We identify general conditions under which the proposed method produces consistent estimate of the FDP. As a byproduct that is

Local polynomial estimators are popular techniques for nonparametric regression estimation and have received great attention in the literature. Their simplest version, the local constant estimator, can be easily extended to the errors-in-variables context by exploiting its similarity with the deconvolution kernel density estimator. The generalization of the higher order versions of the estimator, however, is not straightforward and has remained an open problem for the last 15 years. We propose an innovative local polynomial estimator of any order in the errors-in-variables context, derive its design-adaptive asymptotic properties and study its finite sample performance on simulated examples. We provide not only a solution to a long-standing open problem, but also provide methodological contributions to error-in-variable regression, including local polynomial estimation of derivative functions.

The main purpose of this workshop was to assemble international leaders from statistics and machine learning to identify important research problems, to cross-fertilize between the disciplines, and to ultimately start coordinated research efforts toward better solutions. The workshop focused on discussing modern methods for analysis complex high dimensional data with applications to econometrics, finance, biomedicine, genomics etc.

Nonparametric deconvolution problems require one to recover an unknown density when the data are contaminated with errors. Optimal global rates of convergence are found under the weighted <i>L</i>_<i>p</i>loss (1 <i>p</i> ). It appears that the optimal rates of convergence are extremely low for supersmooth error distributions. To resolve this difficulty, we examine how high the noise level can be for deconvolution to be feasible, and for the deconvolution estimate to be as good as the ordinary density estimate. It is shown that if the noise level is not too high, nonparametric Gaussian deconvolution can still be practical. Several simulation studies are also presented.

Local quasi-likelihood estimation is useful for nonparametric modeling in a widely-used exponential family of distributions, called generalized linear models. Yet, the technique cannot be directly applied to situations where a response variable is missing at random. Three local quasi-likelihood estimation techniques are introduced: the local quasi-likelihood estimator using only complete-data; the locally weighted quasi-likelihood method; the local quasi-likelihood estimator with imputed values. These estimators share basically the same first order asymptotic biases and variances. Our simulation results show that substantial efficiency gains can be obtained by using the local quasi-likelihood estimator with imputed values. We develop the local quasi-likelihood imputation methods for estimating the mean functional of the response variable. It is shown that the proposed mean imputation estimators are asymptotically normal with asymptotic variance that can be easily estimated. Data from an ongoing environmental epidemiologic study is used to illustrate the proposed methods.
