In the analysis of cluster data the regression coefficients are frequently assumed to be the same across all clusters. This hampers the ability to study the varying impacts of factors on each cluster. In this paper, a semiparametric model is introduced to account for varying impacts of factors over clusters by using cluster-level covariates. It achieves the parsimony of parametrization and allows the explorations of nonlinear interactions. The random effect in the semiparametric model accounts also for within cluster correlation. Local linear based estimation procedure is proposed for estimating functional coefficients, residual variance, and within cluster correlation matrix. The asymptotic properties of the proposed estimators are established and the method for constructing simultaneous confidence bands are proposed and studied. Improving efficiency for regression coefficients and predicting trajectories of individuals are two important aspects in the analysis of longitudinal data. Both involve estimation of the covariance function. Yet challenges arise in estimating the covariance function of longitudinal data collected at irregular time points. A class of semiparametric models for the covariance function by that imposes a parametric correlation structure while allowing a nonparametric variance function is proposed. A kernel estimator for estimating the nonparametric variance function is developed. Motivated by recent work on studying massive imaging data in various neuroimaging studies, we propose a novel spatially varying coefficient model (SVCM) to capture the varying association between imaging measures in a three-dimensional volume (or two-dimensional surface) with a set of covariates. Two stylized features of neuorimaging data are the presence of multiple piecewise smooth regions with unknown edges and jumps and substantial spatial correlations. To specifically account for these two features, SVCM includes a measurement model with multiple varying coefficient functions, a jumping surface model for each varying coefficient function, and a functional principal component model. We develop a three-stage estimation procedure to simultaneously estimate the varying coefficient functions and the spatial correlations. In this paper, we study robust covariance estimation under the approximate factor model with observed factors. We propose a novel framework to first estimate the initial joint covariance matrix of the observed data and the factors, and then use it to recover the covariance matrix of the observed data. We prove that once the initial matrix estimator is good enough to maintain the element-wise optimal rate, the whole procedure will generate an estimated covariance with desired properties. For data with bounded fourth moments, we propose to use adaptive Huber loss minimization to give the initial joint covariance estimation. This approach is applicable to a much wider class of distributions, beyond sub-Gaussian and elliptical distributions. We also present an asymptotic result for adaptive Hubers M-estimator with a diverging parameter. The conclusions are demonstrated by extensive simulations and real data analysis.

In this paper, we provide the O() corrections to the hydrodynamic model derived by Degond and Motsch from a kinetic version of the model by Vicsek and co-authors describing flocking biological agents. The parameter stands for the ratio of the microscopic to the macroscopic scales. The O() corrected model involves diffusion terms in both the mass and velocity equations as well as terms which are quadratic functions of the first-order derivatives of the density and velocity. The derivation method is based on the standard ChapmanEnskog theory, but is significantly more complex than usual due to both the non-isotropy of the fluid and the lack of momentum conservation.
