The multiple testing procedure plays an important role in detecting the presence of spatial signals for large scale imaging data. Typically, the spatial signals are sparse but clustered. This paper provides empirical evidence that for a range of commonly used control levels, the conventional FDR procedure can lack the ability to detect statistical significance, even if the p-values under the true null hypotheses are independent and uniformly distributed; more generally, ignoring the neighboring information of spatially structured data will tend to diminish the detection effectiveness of the FDR procedure. There are few techniques available for testing whether or not a family of parametric times series models fits a set of data reasonably well without serious restrictions on the forms of alternative models. In this paper, we consider generalised likelihood ratio tests on whether the spectral density function of a stationary time series admits certain parametric forms. We propose a bias correction method for the generalised likelihood ratio test of Fan et al.(2001). In particular, our methods can be applied to test whether or not a residual series is white noise. Sampling properties of the proposed tests are established. A bootstrap approach is proposed for estimating the null distribution of the test statistics. Simulation studies investigate the accuracy of the proposed bootstrap estimate and compare the power of the various ways of constructing the generalised likelihood ratio tests as well as some classic methods like the Cramer-von Mises and Ljung-Box tests. Our results favour the newly proposed bias reduction method using the local likelihood estimator.

This paper is about the propagation of the singularities in the solutions to the Cauchy problem of the spatially inhomogeneous Boltzmann equation with angular cutoff assumption. It is motivated by the work of BoudinDesvillettes on the propagation of singularities in solutions near vacuum. It shows that for the solution near a global Maxwellian, singularities in the initial data propagate like the free transportation. Precisely, the solution is the sum of two parts in which one keeps the singularities of the initial data and the other one is regular with locally bounded derivatives of fractional order in some Sobolev space. In addition, the dependence of the regularity on the cross-section is also given.

In this chapter, we give a selective review of the nonparametric modeling methods using Cox's type of models in survival analysis. We first introduce Cox's model (Cox 1972) and then study its variants in the direction of smoothing. The model fitting, variable selection, and hypothesis testing problems are addressed. A number of topics worthy of further study are given throughout this chapter.

Maximum likelihood ratio theory contributes tremendous success to parametric inferences, due to the fundamental theory of Wilks (1938). Yet, there is no general applicable approach for nonparametric inferences based on function estimation. Maximum likelihood ratio test statistics in general may not exist in nonparametric function estimation setting. Even if they exist, they are hard to nd and can not be optimal as shown in this paper. In this paper, we introduce the sieve likelihood statistics to overcome the drawbacks of nonparametric maximum likelihood ratio statistics. New Wilks' phenomenon is unveiled. We demonstrate that the sieve likelihood statistics are asymptotically distribution free and follow 2-distributions under null hypotheses for a number of useful hypotheses and a variety of useful models including Gaussian white noise models, nonparametric regression models, varying coefficient models and generalized varying coefficient models. We further demonstrate that sieve likelihood ratio statistics are asymptotically optimal in the sense that they achieve optimal rates of convergence given by Ingster (1993). They can even be adaptively optimal in the sense of Spokoiny (1996) by using a simple choice of adaptive smoothing parameter. Our work indicates that the sieve likelihood ratio statistics are indeed general and powerful for nonparametric inferences based on function estimation.
