With modern technology, massive data can easily be collected in a form of multiple sets of curves. New statistical challenge includes testing whether there is any statistically significant difference among these sets of curves. In this article we propose some new tests for comparing two groups of curves based on the adaptive Neyman test and the wavelet thresholding techniques introduced earlier by Fan. We demonstrate that these tests inherit the properties outlined by Fan and that they are simple and powerful for detecting differences between two sets of curves. We then further generalize the idea to compare multiple sets of curves, resulting in an adaptive high-dimensional analysis of variance, called HANOVA. We consider an inverse problem of recovering a time-dependent factor of an unknown source on some subboundary for a diffusion equation with time fractional derivative by nonlocal measurement data. Such fractional-order equations describe anomalous diffusion of some contaminants in heterogeneous media such as soil and model the contamination process from an unknown source located on a part of the boundary of the concerned domain. For this inverse problem, we firstly establish the well-posedness in some Sobolev space. Then we propose two regularizing schemes in order to reconstruct an unknown boundary source stably in terms of the noisy measurement data. The first regularizing scheme is based on an integral equation of the second kind which an unknown boundary source solves, and we prove a convergence rate of regularized solutions with a suitable choice strategy of the regularizing parameter. The second regularizing scheme relies directly on discretization by the radial basis function for the initial-boundary value problem for fractional diffusion equation, and we carry out numerical tests, which show the validity of our proposed regularizing scheme.

We discuss our recent work [4] in which gravitational radiation was studied by evaluating the Wang-Yau quasi-local mass of surfaces of fixed size at the infinity of both axial and polar perturbations of the Schwarzschild spacetime, \`{a} la Chandrasekhar [1].

We study the variation of relative cohomology for a pair consisting of a smooth projective hypersurface and an algebraic subvariety in it. We construct an inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs equation by applying a Picard-Fuchs operator to the holomorphic top form on a toric Calabi-Yau hypersurface, and deriving a general formula for the d -exact form on one side of the equation. We also derive a double residue formula, giving a purely algebraic way to compute the inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs equations for Abel-Jacobi map, which has played an important role in recent study of D-branes [25]. Using the variation formalism, we prove that the relative periods of toric B-branes on a toric Calabi-Yau hypersurface satisfy the enhanced GKZ-hypergeometric system proposed in physics literature [6], and discuss the relations between the works [25] [21] [6] in recent study of open string mirror symmetry. We also give the general solutions to the enhanced hypergeometric system.
