The Burton-Cabrera-Frank (BCF) model for the flow of line defects (steps) on crystal surfaces has offered useful insights into nanostructure evolution. This model has rested on phenomenological grounds. Our goal is to show via scaling arguments the emergence of the BCF theory for noninteracting steps from a stochastic atomistic scheme of a kinetic restricted solid-on-solid model in one spatial dimension. Our main assumptions are: adsorbed atoms (adatoms) form a dilute system, and elastic effects of the crystal lattice are absent. The step edge is treated as a front that propagates via probabilistic rules for atom attachment and detachment at the step. We formally derive a quasistatic step flow description by averaging out the stochastic scheme when terrace diffusion, adatom desorption, and deposition from above are present.

Statistical procedures designed for analysing multivariate data sets often emphasize different sample statistics. While some procedures emphasize the estimates of both the mean vector and the covariance matrix , others may emphasize only one of these two sample quantities. In effect, while an unusual observation in a data set has a deleterious impact on the results from an analysis that depends heavily on the covariance matrix, its effect when dependence is on the mean vector may be minimal. The aim of this paper is to develop diagnostic measures for identifying influential observations of different kinds. Three diagnostic measures, based on the local influence approach, are constructed to identify observations that exercise undue influence on the estimate of , of , and of both together. Real data sets are analysed and results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed measures.

This paper proves the local Lipschitz property for harmonic (or positive subharmonic) functions on graphs. An example is also obtained to show that the global Lipschitz property of harmonic function on graphs does not hold.

In an upcoming paper by Lee and Wang, we construct examples of two-dimensional Hamiltonian stationary self-shrinkers and self-expanders for Lagrangian mean curvature flows, which are asymptotic to the union of two Schoen-Wolfson cones. These self-shrinkers and self-expanders can be glued together to yield solutions of the Brakke flow - a weak formulation of the mean curvature flow. Moreover, there is no mass loss along the Brakke flow. In this paper, we generalize these results to higher dimensions. We construct new higher-dimensional Hamiltonian stationary cones of different topology as generalizations of the Schoen-Wolfson cones. Hamiltonian stationary self-shrinkers and self-expanders that are asymptotic to these Hamiltonian stationary cones are constructed as well. They can also be glued together to produce eternal solutions of the Brakke flow without mass loss. Finally, we show that the same conclusion holds for those Lagrangian self-similar examples recently found by Joyce, Tsui and the first author.

We derive an upper bound on the free energy of a Bose gas at density $ \varrho $ and temperature T. In combination with the lower bound derived previously by Seiringer (Commun. Math. Phys. 279(3): 595–636, 2008), our result proves that in the low density limit, i.e., when $ a^3 \varrho \ll 1$, where $a$ denotes the scattering length of the pair-interaction potential, the leading term of $\Delta f$, the free energy difference per volume between interacting and ideal Bose gases, is equal to $ 4\pi a(2\varrho^{2}-[\varrho-\varrho_{c}]^{2}_{+}) $. Here, $\varrho_c (T)$ denotes the critical density for Bose–Einstein condensation (for the ideal Bose gas), and $ [⋅]_{+}= max \{⋅ , 0\}$ denotes the positive part.
