We develop a PetrovGalerkin stabilization method for multiscale convectiondiffusion transport systems. Existing stabilization techniques add a limited number of degrees of freedom in the form of bubble functions or a modified diffusion, which may not be sufficient to stabilize multiscale systems. We seek a local reduced-order model for this kind of multiscale transport problems and thus, develop a systematic approach for finding reduced-order approximations of the solution. We start from a PetrovGalerkin framework using optimal weighting functions. We introduce an auxiliary variable to a mixed formulation of the problem. The auxiliary variable stands for the optimal weighting function. We study Schrdinger operators on an infinite quantum graph of a chain form which consists of identical rings connected at the touching points by -couplings with a parameter\alpha\in {\bb R}. If the graph is' straight', ie periodic with respect to ring shifts, its Hamiltonian has a band spectrum with all the gaps open whenever 0. We consider a'bending'deformation of the chain consisting of changing one position at a single ring and show that it gives rise to eigenvalues in the open spectral gaps. We analyze dependence of these eigenvalues on the coupling and the'bending angle'as well as resonances of the system coming from the bending. We also discuss the behaviour of the eigenvalues and resonances at the edges of the spectral bands.

This paper is devoted to the study of the proximal point algorithm for solving monotone and nonmonotone nonlinear complementarity problems. The proximal point algorithm is to generate a sequence by solving subproblems that are regularizations of the original problem. After given an appropriate criterion for approximate solutions of subproblems by adopting a merit function, the proximal point algorithm is verified to have global and superlinear convergence properties. For the purpose of solving the subproblems efficiently, we introduce a generalized Newton method and show that only one Newton step is eventually needed to obtain a desired approximate solution that approximately satisfies the appropriate criterion under mild conditions. The motivations of this paper are twofold. One is analyzing the proximal point algorithm based on the generalized Fischer-Burmeister function which includes the Fischer-Burmeister function as special case, another one is trying to see if there are relativistic change on numerical performance when we adjust the parameter in the generalized Fischer-Burmeister.

This paper proposes a two-level continuum transportation system approach to modeling a dynamic taxi traffic assignment (DTTA) problem in a dense network with real-time traffic information provision and three types of vehicles, including private cars, occupied taxis, and vacant taxis. The proposed approach treats the dense network as a continuum in the first level, in which private car and occupied taxi drivers are free to choose their paths in a two-dimensional continuous space. The proposed approach also divides the modeling region into many identical squares to form a cell-based network in the second level, in which the cells are classified into two categories: target cell with an acceptable expected rate of return (EROR) to vacant taxi drivers and non-target cell with an unacceptable EROR. The EROR associated with a cell is the ratio of the cumulative expected profit of a taxi driver who successfully picks up a customer during the customer search that starts from that cell to the sum of expected search time for this customer and expected occupied travel time to serve this customer. Based on the cell-based network, we develop a cell-based intervening opportunity model to capture the fact that vacant taxi drivers can meet a customer on the way to their destination zones and estimate the EROR. Each vacant taxi driver has a mixed strategy to determine his/her customer-search direction according to the EROR: Each vacant taxi driver in a target cell selects its neighbor cells with maximum EROR, and each vacant taxi driver in a non-target cell selects the travel time-based shortest path to his/her target cell. Meanwhile, each private car driver chooses the path that minimizes his/her own generalized travel cost, and each occupied taxi driver chooses the path that minimizes his/her customer's generalized in-vehicle travel cost. In our model, traffic density in the system is governed by the conservation law (CL), and the flow directions of different vehicles are determined by the path-choice strategies of their drivers, which are captured by Hamilton–Jacobi (HJ) equations. Both the proposed CL and HJ equations can be solved by the Lax–Friedrichs scheme, which forms the backbone of the developed solution algorithm. Finally, numerical examples and a case study are used to demonstrate the properties of the model, the performance of the solution algorithm, and the value of using our methodology for estimating network performance.

We investigate non-equilibrium particle transport in a system consisting of a geometric scatterer and two leads coupled to heat baths with different chemical potentials. We derive an expression for the corresponding current, the carriers of which are fermions, and analyze numerically its dependence on the model parameters in examples where the scatterer has a rectangular or triangular shape.
