We review the existence results of traveling wave solutions to the reaction-diffusion equations with periodic diffusion (convection) coefficients and combustion (bistable) nonlinearities. We prove that whenever traveling waves exist, the solutions of the initial value problem with either frontlike or pulselike data propagate with the constant effective speeds of traveling waves in all suitable directions. In the case of bistable nonlinearity and one space dimension, we give an example of nonexistence of traveling waves which causes quenching (localization) of wavefront propagation. Quenching (localization) only occurs when the variations of the media from their constant mean values are large enough. Our related numerical results also provide evidence for this phenomenon in the parameter regimes not covered by the analytical example. We propose Gaussian-beam based Eulerian methods to compute semi-classical solutions of the Schrdinger equation. Traditional Gaussian beam type methods for the Schrdinger equation are based on the Lagrangian ray tracing. Based on the first Eulerian Gaussian beam framework proposed in Leung et al.[S. Leung, J. Qian, R. Burridge, Eulerian Gaussian beams for high frequency wave propagation, Geophysics 72 (2007) SM61SM76], we develop a new Eulerian Gaussian beam method which uses global Cartesian coordinates, level-set based implicit representation and Liouville equations. The resulting method gives uniformly distributed phases and amplitudes in phase space simultaneously. To obtain semi-classical solutions to the Schrdinger equation with different initial wave functions, we only need to slightly modify the summation formula. A new Tikhonov regularization method of Fuhry and Reichel [A new Tikhonov regularization method, Numerical Algorithms, 59:433-445, 2011] exhibits the excellent properties for ill-posed problems, but it can only deal with small or moderate size problems because of the expensive computation of singular value decomposition (SVD). In this paper, we extend the above new Tikhonov regularization method to solve large-scale problems, e.g., image restoration problem with periodic boundary conditions, and realize this extending by applying Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT) algorithm to the spectral decomposition of the block circulant with circulant blocks (BCCB) matrices. Experimental results confirm the superiority of our new method.
