In this paper, we propose and analyze a new stabilized finite element method using continuous piecewise linear (or bilinear) elements for solving 2D reaction-convection-diffusion equations. The equation under consideration involves a small diffusivity $\varepsilon$ and a large reaction coefficient $\sigma$, leading to high P\'eclet number and high Damk\"{o}hler number. In addition to giving error estimates of the approximations in $L^2$ and $H^1$ norms, we explicitly establish the dependence of error bounds on the diffusivity, the $L^{\infty}$ norm of convection field, the reaction coefficient and the mesh size. Our analysis shows that the proposed method is particularly suitable for problems with a small diffusivity and a large reaction coefficient, or more precisely, with a large mesh P\'eclet number and a large mesh Damk\"{o}hler number. Several numerical examples exhibiting boundary or interior layers are given to illustrate the high accuracy and stability of the proposed method. The results obtained are also compared with those of existing stabilization methods.

We study a robust and efficient eigensolver for computing the positive dense spectrum of the two-dimensional transmission eigenvalue problem (TEP) which is derived from the Maxwell’s equation with complex media in pseudo-chiral model and the transverse magnetic mode. The discretized governing equations by the N ́ed ́elec edge element result in a large-scale quadratic eigenvalue problem (QEP). We estimate half of the positive eigenvalues of the QEP are on some interval which forms a dense spectrum of the QEP. The quadratic Jacobi-Davidson method with a so-called non-equivalence deflation technique is proposed to compute the dense spectrum of the QEP. Intensive numerical experiments show that our proposed method makes the convergence efficiently and robustly even it needs to compute more than 5000 desired eigenpairs. Numerical results also illustrate that the computed eigenvalue curves can be approximated by the non- linear functions which can be applied to estimate the density of the eigenvalues for the TEP.

Let$K$be the class of trigonometric series of power type, i.e. Taylor series $$\sum\nolimits_{n = 0}^\infty {c_n z^n } $$ for$z$=$e$^{$ix$}, whose partial sums for all$x$in$E$, where$E$is a nondenumerable subset of [0, 2π), lie on a$finite$number of circles (a priori depending on$x$) in the complex plane. The main result of this paper is that for every member of the class$K$, there exist a complex number ω, |ω|=1, and two positive integers $$\nu , \kappa , \nu < \kappa $$ , such that for the coefficients$c$_{$n$}we have: $$c_{\mu + \lambda \left( {\kappa - \nu } \right)} = c_\mu \omega ^\lambda , \mu = \nu ,\nu + 1, \ldots , \kappa - 1, \lambda = 1,2,3, \ldots $$ . Thus, every member of the class$K$has (with minor modifications) a representation of the form: $$P(x)\sum\nolimits_{n = 0}^\infty {e^{iknx} ,} $$ where P($x$) is a suitable trigonometric polynomial and$k$a positive integer. The proof is elementary but rather long. This result is closely related to a theorem of Marcinkiewicz and Zygmund on the circular structure of the set of limit points of the sequence of partial sums of ($C$, 1) summable Taylor series.
