We prove that there are no stable intersections of regular Cantor sets in the$C$^{1}topology: given any pair ($K$,$K$′) of regular Cantor sets, we can find, arbitrarily close to it in the$C$^{1}topology, pairs $ \left( {\tilde{K},\tilde{K}'} \right) $ of regular Cantor sets with $ \tilde{K} \cap \tilde{K}' = \emptyset $ .

In 1975, P. Erd\H os proposed the problem of determining the maximum number $f(n)$ of edges in a graph with $n$ vertices in which any two cycles are of different lengths. The sequence $(c_1,c_2,\cdots,c_n)$ is the cycle length distribution of a graph $G$ of order $n$， where $c_i$ is the number of cycles of length $i$ in $G$. Let $f(a_1,a_2,\cdots,$ $a_n)$ denote the maximum possible number of edges in a graph which satisfies $c_i\leq a_i$ where $a_i$ is a nonnegative integer. In 1991, Shi posed the problem of determining $f(a_1,a_2,\cdots,a_n)，$ which extended the problem due to Erd\H os, it is clear that $f(n)=f(1,1,\cdots,1)$. Let $g(n,m)=f(a_1,a_2,\cdots,a_n),$ $a_i=1$ for all $i/m$ be integer, $a_i=0$ for all $i/m$ be not integer. It is clear that $f(n)=g(n,1)$. We prove that $\liminf\sb {n \to \infty} {f(n)-n \over \sqrt n} \geq \sqrt {2 + \frac{40}{99}},$ which is better than the previous bounds $\sqrt 2$ (Shi, 1988), $\sqrt {2 + \frac{7654}{19071}}$ (Lai, 2017). We show that $\liminf_{n \rightarrow \infty} {g(n,m)-n\over \sqrt \frac{n}{m}} > \sqrt {2.444},$ for all even integers $m$. We make the following conjecture: $\liminf\sb {n \to \infty} {f(n)-n \over \sqrt n} > \sqrt {2.444}.$

Let X be a smooth, projective, geometrically connected curve over a finite field Fq, and let G be a split semisimple algebraic group over Fq. Its dual group Gˆ is a split reductive group over Z. Conjecturally, any l-adic Gˆ-local system on X (equivalently, any conjugacy class of continuous homomorphisms π1(X)→Gˆ(Q¯¯¯¯l)) should be associated with an everywhere unramified automorphic representation of the group G. We show that for any homomorphism π1(X)→Gˆ(Q¯¯¯¯l) of Zariski dense image, there exists a finite Galois cover Y→X over which the associated local system becomes automorphic.

In this paper, a structure-preserving algorithm is developed for the computation of a semi-stabilizing solution of a Generalized Algebraic Riccati Equation (GARE). The semi-stabilizing solution of GAREs has been used to characterize the solvability of the (J, J ′ )-spectral factorization problem in control theory for general rational matrices which may have poles and zeros on the extended imaginary axis. The main difficulty in solving such a GARE lies in the fact that its associated Hamiltonian/skew-Hamiltonian pencil has eigenvalues on the extended imaginary axis. Consequently, it is not clear which eigenspace of the associated Hamiltonian/skew-Hamiltonian pencil can characterize the desired semi-stabilizing solution. That is, it is not clear which eigenvectors and principal vectors corresponding to the eigenvalues on the extended imaginary axis should be contained in the eigenspace that we wish to compute. Hence, the well-known generalized eigenspace approach for the classical algebraic Riccati equations cannot be employed directly. The proposed algorithm consists of a structure-preserving doubling algorithm (SDA) and a postprocessing procedure to determine the desired eigenvectors and principal vectors corresponding to the purely imaginary and infinite eigenvalues. Under mild assumptions, linear convergence of rate 1/2 for the SDA is proved. Numerical experiments illustrate that the proposed algorithm performs efficiently and reliably.
