We show that a compact, connected set which has uniform oscillations at all points and at all scales has dimension strictly larger than 1. We also show that limit sets of certain Kleinian groups have this property. More generally, we show that if$G$is a non-elementary, analytically finite Kleinian group, and its limit set Λ($G$) is connected, then Λ($G$) is either a circle or has dimension strictly bigger than 1.

A convex non-convex variational model is proposed for multiphase image segmentation. We consider a specially designed non-convex regularization term which adapts spatially to the image structures for better controlling of the segmentation and easy handling of the intensity inhomogeneities. The nonlinear optimization problem is effciently solved by an Alternating Directions Methods of Multipliers procedure. We provide a convergence analysis and perform numerical experiments on several images, showing the effectiveness of this procedure.

In this follow-up work, we extend the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods previously developed on rectangular meshes \cite{previous} to triangular meshes. The DG schemes in \cite{previous} are both optimally convergent and energy conserving. However, as we shall see in the numerical results section, the DG schemes on triangular meshes only have suboptimal convergence rate. We prove the energy conservation and an error estimate for the semi-discrete schemes. The stability of the fully discrete scheme is proved and its error estimate is stated. We present extensive numerical results with convergence consistent of our error estimate, and simulations of wave propagation in Drude metamaterials to demonstrate the flexibility of triangular meshes.

In this paper, we show the Yau’s gradient estimate for harmonic maps into a metric space (X, dX ) with curvature bounded above by a constant κ (κ 􏰣 0) in the sense of Alexandrov. As a direct application, it gives some Liouville theorems for such harmonic maps. This extends the works of Cheng (1980) and Choi (1982) to harmonic maps into singular spaces.

We perform a numerical study of the heat transfer and flow structure of Rayleigh-Benard (RB) convection in (in most cases regular) porous media, which are comprised of circular, solid obstacles located on a square lattice. This study is focused on the role of porosity in the flow properties during the transition process from the traditional RB convection with (so no obstacles included) to Darcy-type porous-media convection with approaching 0. Simulations are carried out in a cell with unity aspect ratio, for Rayleigh number from to and varying porosities , at a fixed Prandtl number , and we restrict ourselves to the two-dimensional case. For fixed , the Nusselt number is found to vary non-monotonically as a function of ; namely, with decreasing , it first increases, before it decreases for approaching 0. The non-monotonic behaviour of originates from two competing effects of the porous structure on the heat transfer. On the one hand, the flow coherence is enhanced in the porous media, which is beneficial for the heat transfer. On the other hand, the convection is slowed down by the enhanced resistance due to the porous structure, leading to heat transfer reduction. For fixed , depending on , two different heat transfer regimes are identified, with different effective power-law behaviours of versus , namely a steep one for low when viscosity dominates, and the standard classical one for large . The scaling crossover occurs when the thermal boundary layer thickness and the pore scale are comparable. The influences of the porous structure on the temperature and velocity fluctuations, convective heat flux and energy dissipation rates are analysed, further demonstrating the competing effects of the porous structure to enhance or reduce the heat transfer.
