Kadison and Kastler introduced a natural metric on the collection of all$C$*-subalgebras of the bounded operators on a separable Hilbert space. They conjectured that sufficiently close algebras are unitarily conjugate. We establish this conjecture when one algebra is separable and nuclear. We also consider one-sided versions of these notions, and we obtain embeddings from certain near inclusions involving separable nuclear$C$*-algebras. At the end of the paper we demonstrate how our methods lead to improved characterisations of some of the types of algebras that are of current interest in the classification programme.

We propose an efficient threshold dynamics method for topology optimization for fluids modeled with the Stokes equation. The proposed algorithm is based on minimization of an objective energy function that consists of the dissipation power in the fluid and the perimeter approximated by nonlocal energy, subject to a fluid volume constraint and the incompressibility condition. We show that the minimization problem can be solved with an iterative scheme in which the Stokes equation is approximated by a Brinkman equation. The indicator functions of the fluid-solid regions are then updated according to simple convolutions followed by a thresholding step. We demonstrate mathematically that the iterative algorithm has the total energy decaying property. The proposed algorithm is simple and easy to implement. A simple adaptive time strategy is also used to accelerate the convergence of the iteration. Extensive numerical experiments in both two and three dimensions show that the proposed iteration algorithm is quite robust and converges in much fewer iterations and is more efficient than many existing methods.

In this paper, we first establish an $L^2$-type Dolbeault isomorphism for logarithmic differential forms by H\"{o}rmander's $L^2$-estimates. By using this isomorphism and the construction of smooth Hermitian metrics, we obtain a number of new %Akizuki-Kodaira-Nakano type vanishing theorems for sheaves of logarithmic differential forms on compact K\"ahler manifolds with simple normal crossing divisors, which generalize several classical vanishing theorems, including Norimatsu's vanishing theorem, Gibrau's vanishing theorem, Le Potier's vanishing theorem and a version of the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem.

In this paper we connect Calderón and Zygmund’s notion of Lp-differentiability (Calderón and Zygmund, Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 46:1385–1389, 1960) with some recent characterizations of Sobolev spaces via the asymptotics of non-local functionals due to Bourgain, Brezis, and Mironescu (Optimal Control and Partial Differential Equations, pp. 439–455, 2001). We show how the results of the former can be generalized to the setting of the latter, while the latter results can be strengthened in the spirit of the former. As a consequence of these results we give several new characterizations of Sobolev spaces, a novel condition for whether a function of bounded variation is in the Sobolev space W1,1, and complete the proof of a characterization of the Sobolev spaces recently claimed in (Leoni and Spector, J Funct Anal 261:2926–2958, 2011; Leoni and Spector, J Funct Anal 266:1106–1114, 2014).

In this follow-up work, we extend the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods previously developed on rectangular meshes \cite{previous} to triangular meshes. The DG schemes in \cite{previous} are both optimally convergent and energy conserving. However, as we shall see in the numerical results section, the DG schemes on triangular meshes only have suboptimal convergence rate. We prove the energy conservation and an error estimate for the semi-discrete schemes. The stability of the fully discrete scheme is proved and its error estimate is stated. We present extensive numerical results with convergence consistent of our error estimate, and simulations of wave propagation in Drude metamaterials to demonstrate the flexibility of triangular meshes.
