We propose a dynamically bi-orthogonal method (DyBO) to solve time dependent stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs). The objective of our method is to exploit some intrinsic sparse structure in the stochastic solution by constructing the sparsest representation of the stochastic solution via a bi-orthogonal basis. It is well-known that the KarhunenLoeve expansion (KLE) minimizes the total mean squared error and gives the sparsest representation of stochastic solutions. However, the computation of the KL expansion could be quite expensive since we need to form a covariance matrix and solve a large-scale eigenvalue problem. The main contribution of this paper is that we derive an equivalent system that governs the evolution of the spatial and stochastic basis in the KL expansion. We propose a computational framework named iterative local adaptive majorize-minimization (I-LAMM) to simultaneously control algorithmic complexity and statistical error when fitting high dimensional models. I-LAMM is a two-stage algorithmic implementation of the local linear approximation to a family of folded concave penalized quasi-likelihood. The first stage solves a convex program with a crude precision tolerance to obtain a coarse initial estimator, which is further refined in the second stage by iteratively solving a sequence of convex programs with smaller precision tolerances. Theoretically, we establish a phase transition: the first stage has a sublinear iteration complexity, while the second stage achieves an improved linear rate of convergence. Though this framework is completely algorithmic, it provides solutions with optimal statistical performances and controlled algorithmic complexity for a large family

The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the stability and error estimates of the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) methods coupled with implicit-explicit (IMEX) time discretization schemes, for solving one-dimensional convection-diffusion equations with a nonlinear convection. Both Runge-Kutta and multi-step IMEX methods are considered. By the aid of the energy method, we show that the IMEX LDG schemes are unconditionally stable for the nonlinear problems, in the sense that the time-step $\dt$ is only required to be upper-bounded by a positive constant which depends on the flow velocity and the diffusion coefficient, but is independent of the mesh size $h$. We also give optimal error estimates for the IMEX LDG schemes, under the same temporal condition, if a monotone numerical flux is adopted for the convection. Numerical experiments are given to verify our main results.

In this paper, we investigate the superconvergence property of the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) methods for solving one-dimensional linear time dependent fourth order problems. We prove that the error between the LDG solution and a particular projection of the exact solution, $\bar{e}_u$, achieves $(k+\frac32)$-th order superconvergence when polynomials of degree $k$ ($k\ge 1$) are used. Numerical experiments of $P^k$ polynomials, with $1\le k \le3$, are displayed to demonstrate the theoretical results, which show that the error $\bar{e}_u$ actually achieves $(k+2)$-th order superconvergence, indicating that the error bound for $\bar{e}_u$ obtained in this paper is sub-optimal. Initial-boundary value problems, nonlinear equations and solutions having singularities are numerically investigated to verify that the conclusions hold true for very general cases.
